so my loop is going to be exclusively external radaitors ( the nexxxos 1080 rad to be precise ) and i am curious if i can use either of my current pumps with my loop being atleast 3m long? i have the corsair xd3 and an older ek D5 pump which i would like to attach to FLT 120.

i have 2 problems ;-
1, the XD3 is only rated at 2.1m max head pressure.
2, the EK D5 is PWM and i remember when setting my loop up it would be useless unless the PWM cable was powered.

also i dont plan on powering the USB cable, i was considering getting an external PSU to power all fans and pump on the rad.

what would happen if i used the xd3?
does anybody know how i can make the D5 no need pwm power?

Don't forget head pressure means vertically
So not to say it can't move coolant more than 2.1m
In a loop
Should be able to make the pwm run at max
The d5 isn't powered by pwm is it
It's powered by molex or sata?

You are correct about the pump. I recall when filling my loop I had to turn the system on otherwise it would be running so slow the liquid wouldn't move, but it has just dawned on me that I never tried it without the pwm cable being plugged in. Always had a itx loop so needed cables plugged in before I had filled the loop.

Hmm that head pressure is good then because it won't be more than 1m elevated.

It depends on the d5 too
Some run full speed with pwm disconnected
Some run low speed
Never tried but if it runs lowest speed
There should be a way to trick it into thinking
It's getting a pwm signal
Some have 3 wire pwm Some just 1 yellow signal wire
2.1m head may indeed be enough
Though obviously blocks, radiators etc will slow it down
Or reduce the pressure however you want to call it
Could try a test loop before fitting anything in the case

the ekwb site says the D5 runs maximum speed with no pwn duty cycle or whatever. the D5 is 3.9m hp though so should be good with that. means ive got an XD3 sitting doing nothing then lol.
