Since getting my rig up and running again , there has been a metallic smell coming from the rear fan , which originates from the cpu area on the motherboard.

The first time i got my rig up and running it did the same , so i sent the motherboard back because i thought it was deffective .

With this second motherboard doing the same again im thinking it is the order of my loop that is causing the problem. The way the loop goes is : res > rad > gpu > cpu > rad > res

I know there is something to do with max thermal load . what dawned on me today is that the water going to the cpu isnt actually cooled by a rad before hand so when it goes over the cpu it is mayby picking up more heat along the way and causing it to give off this mettallic smell that there is.

Atm im thinking i might have to reconfigure the loop order, anyone got any thoughts on what i should do , or any advice in general ?

Loop order is unimportant apart from the res has to come before the pump, everything else doesn't matter and it won't make the slightest difference to temps. There is actually very little difference in water temps across a loop. I have water temp sensors on the inlet and outlet of my rads and there is anything from a 0.5-1.6 degree C difference between in and out depending on what I am doing on the pc. Are the rads new? If so they can give off a strange odour for a while which will eventually disappear.

Yea the rads are new but the metallic smell is from the cpu area, atm the sensor says my cpu is at 33.7c but its not exactly on the very back , so the real temp could be a few degrees higher.

Coming from CPU area I would say its the CPU Water block.

Again i wouldn't worry

Order of Loop wont affect smells anyway :)

It was the rads all along , i was about to drain the loop so i could see if there was something wrong with the cpu water block mount and i had one last try at determening the source of it.

It comes from a specific part of the rads where one of them is damaged a little on the fins, luckily there is no leakage. Guess its abwaiting game now lol

I don't understand why some bent fins would make a metallic smell though.

If it's just the fins that are bent, just bend them back. No need for a replacement.

Im thinking its the bit of heat in the rads having an effect on the damaged metal and paint that kind of mixed when they bent, i bent them back almost imediatly after it happening.
