Can i grab some opinions on this? :)

So for the 1st time in 2years something has gone wrong on my GTO :o
At full boost i get the dreaded noise of whooshing coming from the engine bay and the car looses some power. Off full boost the car goes as it should and drives fine.
Potentially it sounds like its coming from around one of the turbos and the area the noise is coming from there is only induction piping.
The BOV is on the other side so i can rule that out.

Potential dodgy pipe or turbo waste-gate? As there is no constant hiss and nothing else in that area leads me to believe that its not likely to be a pipe?

thanks

Get a boost leak check, the classic whoosh could be a gasket gone or intercooler pipe cracked or even somthing as simple as a loose hose clamp. If you search boost leak checker theres tons of DIY jobbies going.

Sounds like a boost leak. To find the leak get a spray bottle, fill it with water and some fairy liquid. Spray it on the intake pipes whilst the engine is running and look for bubbles being formed.

Hopefully it's just a clip that needs tightening.

Good call on the fairy liquid, i'll give that a go at the weekend!. :)

Jut a bit strange in that it goes off like a pressure relief valve, light acceleration and its fine.
Hoping its just a clamp to, but its a good excuse for bigger turbos if ever i knew one :D

Loose hose clamp to blame :o :D

An intercooler clamp was loose enough to allow air out at high boost but not enough for the pipe to come off so at lower boost the pipes own tighness was enough to keep a seal.
A good sign as ever that new pipes are required, after all they are 17 years old now!

Kudos to you for running one, I used to love the look of these as a kid. Out of sheer interest, what are the general running costs like?

Petrol aside, running costs are not that bad in all fairness, mine hasnt cost me anything but consumables (excluding an accident but thats a different story :p) and thanks to specialist insurance companys its very reasonable to insure with ~£230 year tax.

Petrol is a killer though, certainly at the current price of petrol! 30mpg is attainable on the moterway but generally your probably looking at mid teens and low 20's if your lucky!
£100 of petrol tends to get me 350 miles....

Its a love hate relationship, i tally up how much i spend on petrol to how much usage i get and call myself mad, then i go out for a drive and that all goes out the window and promptly sits pride of place on my drive :D

I can't say the MPG surprises me with a 15-20 year old Jap V6! I just assumed that given the age, these cars would start to niggle a bit and cost money that way.

Oh they have there niggles, though nothing thats gonna bite you as long as you treat them like any other 300+bhp car. The problems come when people mod them badly.
For the most part any common problems are easily fixable by the adverage bloke. (Active aero, and centeral locking springs to mind)

In fairness though the economy is not that bad for the car it is :)
