Loosing File Permissions

We have noticed a strange issue some files mostly xls files, are losing their file permissions, to the extent we [the domain admins] can not re-add them, the only way to fix it is to restore from a backup, and we cant overwrite since we dont even have permission to fix the problem.

At first we thought it was either our 2K fileserver attached to our SAN, however the problem has spread to another fileserver on another site.

We are also unable to change the Owner on the file, anything to do with the permissions side of things we can not do

We are using the latest McAfee, and reasonably upto day on the MS patch side of things. We have found no trace of a virus.

This problem happens on 2K, XP workstations, and 2K terminal servers, it is totally random It also happens on Office 97,2000,XP

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions

similar thing happens to me on excel files, using W2k3 64-bit fully patched. If i set the folder they are in not to inherit permissions and set individual perms on the excel sheets below it, they then randomly reset back to what they were after a couple of days. Not been able to find a reason why it is doing it.

Setup auditing on a set of folders which this happens too.

Well we setup auditiing and then wqe got a call that a file was not opening, we checked the audit logs and it showed nothing our of the ordiniary
