Lord of the Rings online

Been playing this with the wife for about a week and we're loving it. We both played EQ2 for a while but found it lacked atmosphere and the world never really kept us hooked - LOTRO is just so much better in that regard.....maybe it's because Middle Earth is so familiar and cozy :)

Only one gripe so far - the combat seems a bit unresponsive and the targeting a bit funky. Sometimes you just stand there doing nothing, like the game is trying to work out what you want to do. Can get very frustrating when you're just standing there like a numpty while a pig is giving you a good tusking :)

Can you do the main quests solo? I seem to remember options for group and solo.

I stopped playing LotRO during the summer so things might have changed.

I found I could Solo up to level <low thirties>, then grouping becomes much more obligatory. An occasional group was necessary for the main story line.

I ended up with a load of low thirties characters and stopped playing.

Any advice for a Elf Lore Master in relation to a profession?

Any links to decent guides?

Historian is what i chose for my Loremaster, tis very handy knocking out Power/Morale potions

The Rift is the latest 'instance' installment and it does have a weekly lock system allowing you to continue further in, but not having played WoW i couldnt tell you if its the same type of thing.

One thing i would say is to pick the race of man for most classes like LM's or Guardians as you will get a trait called 'Strength of Man' which heals +3000 morale in times of need (1hr cooldown), although LM's have a few self heals and also their pets which if they succesfully 'flank' a mob you can steal its morale , nice

*Hunters*, btw my comments are also tongue in cheek, a good hunter is an asset in a fellowship as they can dish out plenty of dmg quickly, they just need to control when they do it

those playing on snowbourn who want some ingame help can contact me anytime whether they need advice or even equipment etc , just add 'tega' 'peloquin' 'eek' and 'zega' to your friends list, that way it will show you when someone is online .. hf

you can set in the options , 'Auto-move' to target or press tab to cycle through mobs, but once you've attacked it should put you in an auto attack mode , but it doesn't select special skills obv ... give it time and you'll be slapping multiple hordes with some ease

hehe, as a hunter i hate most other hunters because they all roll for massive agility, despite it doing next to nothing, and ignoring other stats. i've been able to offtank elites, 1-2 elites often in multiple instances since lvl 30. thing is a lot of people add me as friend after instances and realise i MEAN to take some aggro, and choose exactly how much aggro i cna deal with. but at first glance if i take a mob off a tank they scream havoc and call you crap and generally have a go at not knowing what you are doing.

I solo'd much of the game, i don't prefer it, just didn't bump into that right group that i liked, joined a few kins but found few people playing as i like to.

the main and only issue with the game so far as for lvl 40-50, a heck of a lot of content is group stuff, they've made the class's almost too narrow. to a degree wow is better in that respect as you could focus on 1/2/3 area's of skills, specialise in one, or be basic but wide ranged. with lotro everyone has the same skills, and only play skill really affects how you are, but if 90% hunters suck, the otehr 10% have no chance :( .

Other problems i have with it, i don't mind minstrels, but their attacks, its just silly. overall playing a lute to heal is, a bold choice shall we say, it really gets on my nads making a bunch of noise constantly. but also, unlike other class's who can grab better weapons every few levels/quests, mincers can't really upgrade the damage they do. which makes them spectacularly boring to play.

saying all that, its great, the quests are often very fun to play, it HAS a main story line which WOW really doesn't even have tbh, and it has a lot more instances in general than wow(from what i remember of wow).

i also really get irritated when people say Eve doesn't have grind purely because skills, are time based and learn in/out of game. firstly, that means that past the first month every new "skill" which isn't a flat out attack, its the ability to use a certain classes of stuff, which are things you still have to buy, but the new "skills" take days, weeks to learn. you will NEVER ever be able to use high game level stuff for half a year, or a year after you start playing, maybe even longer no idea how long the late skills take tbh.

you also DO have to grind, you don't get good quest rewards, the quests are completely inane and the grinding is for money, be it sitting in a ship not decked out for battle, going and mining crappy ore in safe zones and running at the first sign of pvp for weeks on end to afford decent ships. no grind, jesus.

at least in wow/lotro/most others quest rewards all throughout the game do actually increase your stats/usefulness and there is never a "need" to grind for gold and buy the very best weapons.

Not going to argue with you about EVE, played it for three years, and although I left a lot of good mates behind when I started playing WoW I don't think I'd want to make the switch back to it as the mmo I play.

I think there is a grind at the end game for WoW, When running the missions you are doing them to get the gold etc for the repair bills from raiding, or to be able to get that epic mount

I got Lord of the rings online played it for around 4 weeks. Its an okay game gets very boring i just found its a nice looking wow.

The best thing i liked about it was the deeds and getting new titles.. The pvp and instance pve was very very lame.

well, all MMo's you have to 'grind' at some point which is something you just have to accept with this genre. WoW i cant comment on as i never tried it, i just couldn't bring myself to play it due to the (imo sorry to upset some) 'childish' graphics (yes i know from mates theres a fantastic game under there) whereas with Lotro the visual representation of Middle Earths locations in some places are stunning.

Most of these games are only as good as the people you meet ingame, whether that be in pug's or Kinships, luckily i joined a mature like minded group (albeit quite small atm)and after nearly a yr its still good fun.

TBH I really like the graphics in WoW, they may be a little cartoony, but I think they work really well, even when compared against more traditionally attractive games such as GW/LOTRO. The atmosphere they create in places like Wetlands/Duskwood/Westfall/Taranis is fantastic.

Agree about the people you meet online raising a good game to being a great game.

I started playing WoW after getting sick of EVE and created a character on Draenor with the intention of joining the old OcUK guild "The Mockers" but couldn't find anyone online to ask. While running toward Ogrimarr (the Orc hometown) I was invited into a guild called Rom Oter by a random guy running past. For some reason I accpeted the invite and I'm pleased to say it was the best unintentional choice I've made while playing MMO's. I immdediately found a couple of guildies my level and went through the leveling through process with a guy from Norwich and a Danish bf/gf couple and enjoyed it immensely, still speak to them every time I play, even though our paths differed after the guild started raiding.

Hi all

Just a quick appologiy to the guys who tried to chat to me in game last night.

was deep in the rift with a Kinship raid and it was quite intense so i couldnt really talk.

usually if u send me a tell i will reply more promptly honest :)

i also in response to some of the above, i solo'd my hunter to about lvl 43, tho its more fun in groups

and to the person who says minstrels r boring! i love my dwarf minstrel leave him alone lol ;)

Lokion lvl 50 minstrel

Lokio lvl 48 Hunter

United Kingdoms Kinship

Snowbourne

its not that its boring, i just find the whole playing music thing incredibly... crap shall we say plus not having that, oo i hit level 15, lets buy a higher dps lute. how they decided to leave that out of the game i don't know.

also very peeved with hunter class bows. for hunters dps/speed mean next to nothing, its about 98.9% down to the min/max damage, you can get a 92 damage bow at , 35-40 if in a big group, realistically most people have it by 42. there really isn't a single higher damage bow available except deep in raid drops and not even the hunter quest bows at 45(which again realistically you don't get till 50) are better. all the bows from 35-40 up increase in speed with little to now damage increase, which means theres no real damage increase for hunters for what will be about 90% of the time you play your alt.

i'm not a huge fan of some of the instances, i don't see the point in making every single person in an instance an elite. Elites, master elites, they are supposed to be the i guess matches for the few hero's there are in the world, not every other guy. I dunno, just finding some of the game very fun, and some of it so amazingly tedious, though i guess thats the same with most mmo's.

Dont get me wrong I loved WOW, only thing I could not hack is having a job that means I get home at 17:30, and a family. I spent a lot of time trying to find a guild that would go to raids 19:30-8pm, was just no interest, no way I can rush home from work and jump of the PC for 3-4 hours without dinner etc I am hoping that LOTRO is not as gear dependant as WOW is, and is is good to find a crafting part of the game that at least makes use of the stuff you make.

everything else seems so DAOC.

In my opinion that is a huge plus point as DAoC was immense. I currently play LoTRO and I'm getting up to my 3rd 50 so I have a little variety to play around with. Mythic (creators of DAoC) are the only reason I'm looking forward to Warhammer so much.

Anyhow, feel free to send me a tell if you're on the Snowbourne server, my characters are:

  1. Lillyblossom - 50 Hunter
  2. Galadamir - 50 Guardian
  3. Handy - 38 Burglar

I couldn't agree more! DAOC was (after UO) the best MMO ever released, it's still good but looking aged.

I should really play LOTRO, have a lifetime account but not had it installed for months :p I tried going back to Wow but it feels like such a huge grind I decided to do a test and ran a bot for hours on end just to see how long it took to get banned, never did even though I abused it silly over my 10 day free "come back and try" trial. I was blatant about using it too, shocking that they didn't ban my account. I'd link to the story I posted on my site about it but don't want to encourage people :)

/slaps Kami! Stay away from mmororprpgs tart!

I could never get into Lotr Online. I think it was because my mmo addiction was already nearing it's end and I saw every MMO in the same way. Imo nothing could have beaten Daoc during it's heyday. Forget all this WoW malarky, almost every game I see has Daoc elements in it.

Lotr had great questing elements but I found myself just running back and forth so much that it was getting tiresome fast. During it's early times quite a few quests were buggy and I just couldn't really find myself liking it that much. I had a blast exploring though and saw some great sights, I just couldn't see anything new that wasn't already in the other mmo's I'd played.
