Lorries, how quick are they without the trailers?

They've certainly got a bit of poke. I know the race trucks are different, but I don't think engine wise they're hugely tuned, and those things go some.

Ive raced a truck up a mountain side road and it was winning, went way past 56 too
Tractor units will waste most average cars, especially 10 > 40 mph when running without a trailer.
The gearing kills them (extremely short) that said, I surprise no end of Chavs when running solo as its known.
Getting it rolling is always slow, once rolling, booting it in say low 7th gear will wake up the traction control, or, spin you 180deg if your not careful!
I often surprise white van man, even with an empty (or near empty) trailer, if anything, you can go that bit quicker with an empty on as it's weight largely stops the unit stepping out.

Yes it is illegal (and, detectable) if phates Dad wants to risk his vocational licence with such a tactic, then more fool him.
Trucks are speed limited for a damn good reason.

Is it nessecery with no load though, they must stop great with no real weight on them

Yes, they do stop very very well without weight on, but, compared to a car or van, they still stop relatively slowly.
I've anchored up hard in the past in an artic and had a chav run into the back of me "I didn't think trucks stopped so quickly" was his comment, they don't , but drive 5 ft from the back end of an empty one and you do get a shock if the driver hits the brakes!
It's only on one of the lorry's.
The breakdown is on the old T reg and isn't on a limiter, not sure if it legally requires one or not. Don't think he legally needs to use a tacho either (on that lorry at least)
The other car transporters and single units are all on limiters though and the drivers obviously use the tacho's
Its a breakdown lorry, he isnt risking anything.
I don't know if you still can, but I've been informed by someone who drives sweepers, that you could get past the limited by repeatedly stamping on the accellerator (revving the **** off it) and the clutch to confuse the system in whichever gear you wanted to go faster in.

Lorries are not that fast.
Only things the "waste" are fully loaded 90bhp LT's and transits and to be fair, you could waste those on a mobility scooter.
I've ridden in an empty unit a couple of times on the road, and done some shunting in the yard, horrible things they are.

Or take the fuse out!!!.
atpbx - you should try sitting in a loaded truck/trailer while it's knocked out of gear going downhill. Gets quite scary at 70mph+.
