Hello all,

Not usually a fan of talking about my weight loss (or lack thereof) but thought that having a thread to post updates and get feedback might actually do me some good.

I've been going to Pure Gym for a fair few weeks now, but feel I'm probably not making the most of it. My workout tends to be quite similar each time I go. I've noticed some positive changes so far, but would like to try and accelerate them.

So I'm 22 and my weight is pretty much equal to my age and I'm just over 6ft tall. I like to think I am relatively strong having played Rugby and done Tae Kwon Do for a good few years when I was younger, though now I have a rather annoying 'winter coat'.

Current workout consists of:
Anything between 10-35 minutes on the cross trainer.
Hopping around the various weight machines, mainly focusing on upper body and arms. I'm not a fan of working on my legs as they're the only thing on my body that's still in good shape and I don't want big legs.

I'd really appreciate your feedback on how I can go about getting the most of my gym membership through getting getting into a routine that will deliver great results... It's time to change!

Welcome, and well done for making the big decision! :)

As ro losing weight, diet is your most important thing to get right. Sort that and you will lose the weight you want. Exercise (and a favourite around here: resistance training) will give the target of your affections something nice to look at when the weight has been lost. ;)

Reharding "not wanting to do legs," you are not suddenly going to turn into the Hulk by working them. In fact, none of your body will. The main reason to work legs from a weightloss perspective is that they have the biggest muscles in them, which means burning the most calories = more effeftive weightloss.

Exercises involving legs (such as squats, deadlifts) have the added benefit or strengtjening your back and core, meaning you will look meaner when the shirt comes off, but also not ridiculous when people see the results of all your arm and chest work. ;)

Razor Blade has suggested Stronglifts because it is ridiculously simple and is very effective for both weightloss and strength. You won't get huge legs doing it (they will get biggee, sure, but I suspect that your legs are probably not very big in the first place) through better blood flow to them, but this just means they will fit better into your trousers. Put it this way:it is called Stronglifts rather than HugeSize for a reason. :)

Cardio also works but not as efficiently as resistance training: you will be in the gym for longer and achieve less (I.e. fewer calories) using cardio machines... and in the end, you will not have any shape to your post-weightloss body... which would be a sad thing, indeed.

Thanks for the responses guys. This is all so new to me so forgive me if I ask any stupid questions. :p

I've downloaded an App called Stronglifts, I'm guessing this is the one? I'm pretty stumped because all of my life I've been told I need to get the heart rate high through cardio.

Do I need to do any sort of warm up before doing the exercises on this App, or can I just jump right into it? Would doing these three exercises a few times actually be sufficient?

Thanks again for all your input and sorry for any stupid questions!

The Ultimate Starter Guide, Icecold's Mobility, Gym Exercise Guide and Form Discussion/Feedback and the Diet - Macros and Calories threads will be especially informative.

It will seem like an overwhelming amount of information at first (it did to me at least) but you'll soon get your head around it.

For now I would focus on your form for the stronglifts exercises. You will do warm ups in the form of just lifting the bar (with no extra weigh on it), though at the very start you may find that your 'working set' is just the bar anyhow.

On top of that it's worth starting to log your food with an app like MyFitnessPal. Don't worry about dieting too much immediately. The first thing to do is to get a better idea of what you're eating right now and that will help you adjust your diet to maximise your gains (or losses, in terms of fat).

Good luck :)

Thanks a lot. :)

I've been using MyFitnessPal a fair bit but ditched it when I realised how much trash I was eating. Funny how I ditched the App and not the food... :p

Billy, will check it out, but how is it relevant?

I read it and followed the advice and lost 1lb/day until I reached my healthy weight, I recommended it to others who had the same result. The focus is on brain health rather than weight loss, which is just an epic side effect.

Even if you choose not to follow the advice, it's really good insight into what effect certain foods have on you - then it's your choice.

I'm reading the preview on Amazon at the moment, it definitely seems really interesting!
