The main PC on my network has lost web connection

It is on NTL with a Linksys router

I can aquire an IP address from the router but not ping the router or the outside world

I can ping internal loopback

I do not have a software firewall

I plugged my laptop onto same cable and it works and have tried another LAN card

I recently had some virus issues but they seemed to be clear and never stopped my network connection at the time

any ideas ?

try ipconfig /flushdns

I take it the router responds to pings from the laptop (ie not a security/router firewall problem)

maybe try x-over link to laptop

network stack could be borked ?

Try setting your IP manually to 192.168.0.x or whatever you have set up, specify the routers IP as your Gateway and try that. Also try disabling and re-enabling the connection, check the connection on the PC is good (eg the cable isn't loose/not clicking in fully - most NIC's have a signal good and activity LED). Check the NIC is showing up in CP while you're at it

Also download AVG or something similar and once it's fixed consider a software firewall like Zone Alarm, i'd also suggest adaware or preferably Spybot S&D but that's up to you.

Hope that helps :)

All of a sudden it burst back into life

but then would intermittently reboot

on this basis I put it down to the virus issues and used the system restore to roll back a few days

seems ok now

Thanks folks

I am in process of sorting security stuff , have

Norton Antivirus
Spyware doctor
Ewido anti spyware
Windows defender

re a firewall , I have the hardware one in the router , would you folks recommend a s/w one as well ? if so I suppose the windows one or zonealarm would be easiest

A Hardware firewall is a good start and a lot of people think it's all that you need but that's like locking your car in a garage overnight but leaving it unlocked and the key's inside.

Ideally you want a hardware firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Intruder Detection System (IDS), you ideally then want a software firewall that allows you to block outgoing traffic on an application basis (read not windows firewall) not to mention application verification.
