Lost! Clutch fluid reservoir cap.

Hello Motors Mechanics.

Just checked my engine oil, again, (have a slight leak that's soon to be corrected) and noticed I'm lacking a clutch fluid reservoir cap. I've not touched it at all recently so it's come off "by itself" in the last 24 hours - since I last checked engine oil.

I've driven 10 miles / 25 minutes to work this morning and did not notice any difference in clutch or any issues changing gear.

The fluid level is just below the minimum line..

I'm currently at work so cannot top it up right now and cannot avoid driving until I get a replacement cap.. So I've covered the top with duct tape, rubber bands & zip-tie to stop any moisture etc. Is that alright or should I call the AA :D :p

I've started it up and used the clutch a few times and the fluid level did not change.

Am I risking the clutch here (it is an expensive one..) or will I simply be unable to change gear should the worst happen - whatever that is?

If it's fine with the dodgy fix for now then I'll drive to the nearest petrol station and top up with dot 4 and get a cap asap (tomorrow)

Will it also need bleeding ?

Thanks in advance.

Car is an 06 Impreza STI with stage 2 clutch.

Unless the reservoir becomes completely empty it'll be fine. By covering it you should prevent any further fluid loss so you should be OK until you can get a replacement. If you do let it get completely empty then the master cylinder will draw in a big slug of air when you press the pedal and the clutch won't disengage fully which is the point at which you should ideally stop driving it.

Your main worry will be checking where all the fluid that's spilt out of the top of the reservoir has gone, clutch/brake fluid is nasty stuff that will strip the paint from any areas it's splashed on to if left so you'll probably want to have a good look around and wipe off any spillage ASAP.

Is this purely a clutch reservoir on the Impreza, or shared with the brake system?

Would suggest getting it topped up ASAP if it's also your brake fluid - consequences being bit worse than losing the clutch.
