A work colleague of my mum took her laptop to the school technician so he could install a font for her. Now for some reason almost all of her documents have dissapeared. System restore didn't work but I was wondering what he could have done to make this happen. I know there are programs to get your work back but this happened yesterday and I have no idea what he has done to it to try and fix it.

Hmm... Data Recovery applications is your best bet.
You could try searching for *.doc selecting find hidden files and folders when you do it.
I'm suprised as it is a school there is no form of backuo for documents. Most have a synch script which backs everything up in %userdir%\My Documents to a network drive/share.
Failing the above, give it back to the techy and tell him he is a n00b and you hold him responsible. I find it incredibly hard to believe a font installation could cause this.
