Lost .docx file

I've randomly lost a .docx file, it seems to have spontaneously disappeared; the link in my recent documents menu says it's been moved or removed and it's not in its original place. No joy in the recycle bin, and even using a data recovery program I've found no trace (except that of a very old incarnation of it, around the time I started writing it). Oddly enough, I can't find any autosave files anywhere, perhaps because I'm unsure of the path of such files (although I've tried most of the usual haunts).

Any ideas at what might have happened here/how to fix?

Well, stop using the "usual haunts" and just seach the whole HDD?

I had this problem with a cheap old LG usb drive.

It hasn't happen since switching to a nice OCZ drive.

Searching for .asd yields nothing at all.

And it wasn't a USB drive, this was on my hard drive...

do a search for docx files to. make sure you include hidden files in the search. it could have hidden itself in a moment of weirdness
