Hi Folks,

I bought a copy of Half life 2 when it came out and want to play it again, however I have lost my game disk and the cd key with it. I know you can download the game if you already have a cd key so I should be able to do that. Does steam keep a copy of the cd key or do you need to enter it again on a fresh install of the game? If you need to enter it again is there anyway of me getting my old cd key if i send details to steam etc (can they tell from my user id what games I used to have?).

Cheers all,

Matt

Just download Steam and install that. When you login with your previous Steam account details, it will reload anything you have access to play.

I downloaded and installed steam and I could log in ok with my old username and password but I can't play HL2 without paying for it in $s ? It seems it the cd key isn't stored under the username or it just hasn't remembered mine. I only had HL2 and CS:S installed but can't play them now without buying them :-(

I have emailed steam to see if they can retreive my cd key from my username so hopefully they'll get back to me really soon!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

Matt

Not liking steam at the moment, but thats my own silly fault for forgetting my login details etc and the system being really unpleasantly designed for such a problem. Emailed support though so hopefully it should get sorted out monday...

Unless you remember your login details for the Steam account which you registered Half-Life 2 for, you're not going to get the game back, as you have no proof of owning the game without the CD-Key and DVD. Steam accounts don't just forget games registered to them, the only way a game can be unregistered is by somebody saying that the CD key they bought was already registered, and somehow they got hold of your key and DVD, but that would mean you having to have given them that, or somebody stealing it from you.

steam is very annoying, especially if you do not have a home connection. The retrieve password for a lost account has never worked with me, when I bought CS with steam from the high street got home and serial had already been nicked. Emailed valve with no reply.

So to some steam can be very annoying.

how does someone loose a cdkey , just put it on a shelf or something man

I've spent the last year travelling the world and so all my possesions were boxed up and put away, I've been through everything and can't find it (lost my farcry dvd too :( ). I'll see what Valve say but maybe I'll just have to buy it again.

Cheers for the help all!

As said above, without proof of owning the game, I doubt you'll be able to get anything back, unless there is some other way that I've not heard of.
