Lost in new monitor tech...

Evening gents,

So I've had my 2700x / 1080ti setup for a while now and my ancient viewsonic monitor is starting to flicker and could do with replacing.

However I am completely baffled by all the options there are these days!

Ideally I am looking for something 24-27inch but no bigger and happy to spend anywhere between 300-450ish, but that's the easy bit!

Now from what I've read i should be looking at a minimum of 144hz but I have no idea if g-sync is worth shelling out for? There's also adaptive sync but I believe this is actually amds freesync so will not work with the 1080ti.

Also 4k vs 1080p? Having only ever used 1080 is 4k worth sticking at 60hz for the size I am looking at?

Any help, advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the replies guys, sounds like 1440p is worth going for over 1080p then.

I will have a look at G-sync but this does seem to boost the price quite a bit, interesting to read that a few of the freesync monitors will work with Nvidia going forward. I think i would like to look for a 144hz if possible to make the most of the 1080ti!

I do like the look of Asus monitors but I am not sure if you are just paying for the name.

That certainly looks to fit the bill quite well, and with £70 off that is a great deal atm...

I always give myself a budget in these threads and very quickly start aiming higher lol

*** Scuse the ignorance though, whats IPS and TN? (whoops google search!)

IPS: Best all-rounder for colours and viewing angles; there are some very high-refresh-rate panels coming onto the market
VA: Poorer response times than IPS and TN, but very deep blacks and great viewing angles
TN: The fastest, but normally with poorer viewing angles but higher refresh rates

I don't think viewing angle is such a problem as I am at a desk so will always be viewing straight on!

Another silly question, I am guessing HDMI 1.4 is the best way to connect to my 1080ti? Sounds like you don't need 2.0+ unless using 4k?

Not sure what DisplayPort v1.2 is lol

Thanks for your help guys, just ordered the pg278qr and a display port cable.

Slightly more than I originally budgeted but may as well get the most out of my 1080ti!

Ah thanks for the info guys, was only the cheap 1m cable so not too worried.

I did check but couldn't find any info on what comes in the box, will the one it comes with be a 1.2?

I have read about some backlight bleed issues on the ips pg279q but not finding many issues listed with the pg278qr...

Needless to say I will be giving it a good once over and checking I am happy with the panel quality. Only thing I have read is that the stock settings on this tn monitor could do with some changes but once changed they are suppose to be very good.

Hi there,

Yes thanks I got it over the weekend, was slightly disappointed when it came to setup as it unfortunately came with a 2 pin european plug rather than the 3 pin uk plug (I blame brexit lol). Guys at OCUK were quick to get the correct lead sent out though and managed to get by with an adapter over the weekend.

I really like the screen, going from 60hz to 165hz and gsync has moved the bar on quite a bit for what I am aiming for but its amazing at how much smoother things are now. Getting anywhere between 60-140 fps in most games, graphics settings depending. No tearing at all and have not really noticed any stutter whilst gaming other than very slight whilst in Heaven benchmark.

I do have a very small amount of backlight bleed in the bottom right (mainly caused by the power led im sure) and bottom left but for me it's nowhere near bad enough for to be concerned, I can never notice it unless on a completely black screen as you are very rarely gaming and looking into the corners.

Overall very happy with it and can't believe I've been using my old monitor for so long now!
