I upgrade every 2 years or so, but this time around I haven't been following the tech and I'm lost.

At the mo I have an i7-950 @ 4GHz (D0 20x200) / Asus p6x58d-e / 2x480gtx

Its used a lot for video and 3d rendering, not gaming so much.

Could I spend £250-£300 on a chip and see a good improvement? Or should I make do for another 12 months? TBH I'd like to upgrade, but I want to make sure I can see if a difference, not just buy new for the sake of it

Thanks

Thank you very much for the advice.

Its good to know I cant get a fantastic improvement without spending silly money - it makes it easier to keep the funds in the bank.

I always spend £250-300 on the chip, thats the sweet spot to me. It seems like theres usually a cpu in that price range that is way ahead of the pack, the q6600 and the d0 I7 spring to mind.

I'll wait and see what next years 'Tock' brings :)
