Lost Internet connection, ethernet "unidentified network"

Hi guys, really hope someone can help.
Last night all of a sudden me and Mrs had to both resign in to WiFi networks on phones. Later on the same night turned pc on, no Internet "unknown network".

-I have constant green led and occasionally orange flash at mobo end.
- I watch as I plug cable in on control panel > network and Internet > network connections >
And it shows "identifying" sometimes for 40secs or just goes straight to "unidentified network".

Shows as unidentified network
"ethernet public network"

It did work at one point tonight for 5 mins, then stopped without me changing anything.

Most of the time, problems found on windows10 diagnosis tool:
"ethernet doesn't have a valid ip configuration"
...
"investigate router or broadband modem issues - the failed
Reset the ethernet adapter - completed

Once I have also seen:
"an ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or might be broken". "plug an ethernet cable into the network adapter" but see that even when I can see the connection is there so no idea why it thinks nothing is plugged in. 2 cables tried also.

Tried...
-all ports on rear of router
-new ethernet drivers
-factory reset router
-calling virgin media
-several ethernet cables
-renaming the connection to "Vladimir Computin" (as it was before the router factory reset, as connection is still named this on the laptop)

IPc4 connectivity - no network access
IPv6 connectivity - no network access
Media state : enabled
Speed = 1Gbps

Sent = 0 Bytes
Received = 1180 Bytes

Next to try...
-a copy of Windows from another ssd
-no idea

Mobo is an Asus x570-p.

Do you phones connect to your router ok, or not sorry did read your post but wasn't 100% clear.

If say if your phones are having issues as well as your PC almost certainly your router.

Those things don't last forever, and you probably won't be able to fix it.

Yeah the Mrs and I both had to put password in again on phones but connected right away with no issues. My laptop also connects over WiFi or ethernet. Will update post now sorry for being unclear my fault.

If the error message is correct, it's strange the router assigns an ip address to the laptop but not the HTPC... You think it could be a faulty router even in that scenario right?

Thanks for help. Really appreciate it honestly after the year I've had. Bike don't work, gaming pc, new oled is going back also as monitor mode not usable at all

These things happen.

You know it would be worth a go, ringing your ISP and see if they can sort you a new router.

I'm with Zen internet, to be fair been a customer since 2008, but couple of years ago I was having wierd issues with my router they sent me a really high quality Fritz box router completely free of charge.

It's worth an ask, and if they do send one it I'll knock one possibility off the list.

The fact your phones played up at the same time though, especially if you were not messing with anything, it's almost certainly the router. They don't last forever those things.

Yeah not even a year old, but I guess even new parts turn up screwed.

I rekkon they'll say well working on the laptop it's not the router it's pc.

I'm not gonna mention the laptop this time, as you say if they send another, it's one other thing off the list
 
If the laptop works
Connected with same ethernet cable
On same ethernet port on router
Routers probably fine
A lot of the time it's because windows stupidly ticks
Turn off this device to save power
So I would look in device manager then network adapter
Then power management
And make sure it hasn't ticked the save power boxes/options
 
Virgin have said they're gonna sent an engineer sent out now... They confirmed it won't cost anything on this occasion but yeah I'll try fix tonight as I'm not entirely sure it's the router either and don't wanna waste anyone's time tbh.

I have another ssd with a working copy of windows on it, I'm gonna try on that, settings should be bang on on that ssd?

OK I unticked that box (it was set to save power) but no change... Damn

Did you Restart the pc after doing it?
And yes if got another SSD with windows
Always worth trying that to rule out
Software or driver issues
Another option is roll back the driver in device manager
If there's a possibility a driver update caused any issues

Edit
Can also look to see if
Obtain IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server automatically
Are selected in ipv4 settings in properties of ethernet adapter

If that doesn't work from elevated command prompt enter
Netsh winsock reset
Netsh int IP reset
Then restart pc

Can you try "ipconfig /all" from an elevated command prompt? What are the IPV4, Subnet & Default Gateway results for your ethernet adapter?

Sounds like you're not getting assigned an IP, unless you're already using a static.
 
Something seriously wrong with this computer... I swear it's toying with me and wants me to smash it in. It's now stuck in flight mode. Flight mode.... On a bloody desktop?!?
It's also booted a few times with constant blue load circle, and taskbar not clickable;
I think the bios update might be screwed you know as it did the same thing several times on a new new test rig (bought another asus x570-p). The reason I got the test rig was after I "upgraded" my cpu/gpu - and the bios for new cpu, I had graphical issues which may or may not be in my head. Wish I would have left the damn thing alone.

Thought I fixed it earlier, randomly plugging cables in and out and it connected to "network 5" which I've never heard of.
Was working fine until I noticed games were taking ages to update - checked and download speed 1.4mbps. 11mpbs upload?
My phone has 120mbps download and also 11mbps upload over WiFi. Laptop the same roughly (ethernet).

Restarted router, touched NOTHING, and again, "unidentified network" shows.

I cancelled the virgin engineer coming out tomorrow as to not waste his time thinking it was fixed... Damn.

Will try some of the above suggestions now. Once I get the damn flight mode off.
 
One other thing to note guys, it's impossible to uninstall the ethernet driver. From device manager I uninstall it, refresh the list, and it pops back up again. Is that normal?

I have never touched Ubuntu is worth the I'm guessing 3-4 hours it'll take me to learn how to use or pretty straight forward? Thanks
 
Yeah windows may just reinstall it
Ubuntu for your needs is a doddle
Simply choose run as live
Or whatever the exact terminology is
IE not the install option
Then just open the web browser
No need to do anything complicated with it

Believe it has Firefox pre installed

Edit 2
If you don't want windows to reinstall it
So you can install a specific driver etc
After uninstalling it
Don't refresh/scan for hardware changes
Just go install the driver you want

Just disabled "radio management services" and flight mode is still active... Can't get rid of the symbol... And now it IS connected to the internet once more. Again this time, about 7mbps.

Not sure if I should go messing around with anything now and just call virgin tomorrow.

Your choice of course
But still looks like it's not a router issue to me
So a virgin engineer may not be of use
And happy to help since insomnia had me awake anyway

Interesting turning off radio service did something
Sounds like it's confused whether it's a WiFi connection or ethernet
As Ubuntu is a live usb it won't alter anything anyway
So would be no different from your pc restarting/being turned off
If Ubuntu doesn't work then I would try virgin
Since they're not giving you the if it's your pc at fault we will bill you spiel
Got nothing to lose

One thing to note guys, pretty sure I'm on to something here...
-if I connect router (virgin hub3.0) to a 4port switch Then switch to my pc, I get Internet connection instantly, however it is only rated to 10Mbps when I go to connection properties from task manager > performance > ethernet (right click) > view network details

My dl speeds are ranging from 3Mbps to 9.5Mbps, but upload speeds are normal at around 10Mbps. The switch is rated to 10/100Mbps

Ive tried change adapter options (right click ethernet 5) > properties > configure > advanced and from there tried changing loads of options, including changing "speed and duplex" to 1.0 Gbps full duplex (as opposed to auto negotiation).

The link speed then changes to 1Gbps until the connection comes back then it goes back to 10Mbps.


-I have a little £6 wifi adapter I just got, gonna try that now.
-virgin engineer coming on Tues.
- Wednesday I should have a used virgin hub 3.0 replacement (got for £10), as virgin refused me a new unit.
-I also have a USB 3.0 to ethernet adapter turning up soon, I wonder what that will do. If that don't work I'm gonna guess the router is at fault.
-also considering buying a proper TP-Link router and setting the virgin hub to modem mode, as advised by a mate. Don't really want loads of routers and cables everywhere though :(
