Wondering if anyone can fill me in before I pay up...

I lost my keys (Ford Fiesta 2003) out in the snow last week, unfortunately it was the only immobiliser key I had. I have a door only key but obviously this doesn't work in the ignition.

I know I need a recut and reprogramme but I get the feeling Ford are taking the **** a bit. I rang up last Friday and was told I'd need 2 keys (£30 each) and it'd take an hours work plus a tow. Rung up again today and they have no recollection of that call and now I need 3 keys and 2 hours work... As I understand a reprogramme only takes a 10-15 mins, hook into the immobiliser and programme a new key to it? Anyone shed any light on that?

I live in Jersey so there is very little choice as to where I can go and two hours of work will probably come in at around £200 over here.

A PATS reprogram is always charged as an hours labour at Ford - apparently if they can't find some security code or other for the car they have to wait for the system to allow them to reprogram it, but you're right, it's usually 10 minutes in and out.

If you have one key (or no keys), you need Ford to reprogram the system for you.

If you have 2 keys, you can add additional keys to the system as per the instructions in the manual. Some dealers will advise you to have 3 keys so if you lose one, you can program your own to replace it.

There are third party diagnostics kit that will reprogram PATS, I know of places on the mainland that specialise is car keys and decent independent garages have them but you might struggle on Jersey.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

I've spent a week wondering around hoping they'd appear when the snow melted and I finally caved today to ring up and book a reprogramme in... then about 20 minutes after this post I got a phone call because someone had found them and handed them in - bingo!

I think it's wise I get another key sorted though, just in case.

Thanks again for the info, was pretty sure they were trying to rip me off with the two hours thing, suppose I'll still have to pay them a visit and get another ignition key sorted
