Hi,

I've got a slow puncture and just went to my local tyre place to get it fixed, but we couldn't find the locking wheel nut key. I don't recall ever seeing it (had the car a year - never changed tyres).

How would you go about resolving it?

Most have a code that came with them (little piece of card with a number on it). With that you could get a new key.

Beyond that you are down to removing them the hard way. I bought a Megane years ago and didn't check if it had a key, months later when I needed new tyres the only way Renault managed to get it off was to weld a bar onto the nut and then rotate the bar to get the whole thing off and then put in a replacement one.

Get someone with an impact socket set to use a socket to get them off, you'll be surprised at how easily they will come off.

As above, i had the same issue with my old Mk II golf BBS alloys, its not too difficult in a workshop with the right tools. IMO those wheel nuts will only stop the average scumbag taking them off in the street, not someone who really wants the wheels off and has the time to do it without someone getting suspicious.

I've found it.

It was where the jack was, which is where matey said he looked - should have checked it. Found it by putting my hand down into the gap and pulled out a small bag with it and other bits in.

D'oh.

Most types you can have off in seconds, just get a socket which roughly fits, smack it on with a big hammer and live happily ever after.

Most tyre places will have a set of tools to remove them.
I would guess it is a common enough occurrence for punters to turn up for new tyres and not be able to find the locknut.

Sticking it in a bright yellow bag will help find it next time ;)
