had the chord mojo on a trial from amazon, had it hooked up to my philips fid x2, fantastic sound but it was my first expensive dac at £400,it's great but i dont really know if it's worth that much as I cant really compare, I don't go out much these days so I think I'm better off with a mains powered dac or a av amp with hi res audio support for tidal ect. so do you think I'm better off upgrading my old onkyo 308 which Is fine for tv/movies but very poor for audio and has no network, im gonna upgrade my speakers also as my jamo 5.1 are crap, so it's between a amp probably cost me about £450 or i keep my onkyo and hook it up to a good dac which should maybe give me better sound, there to many to choose from, anyone got a smls sanskrit..? how does it compare to the mojo

There is one member I remember who bought a Mojo having owned a Sanskrit. He found very little to no difference, so sent the Mojo back.

Some people find they hear a difference with a more expensive DAC, others don't. Better to judge for yourself, whether there is any difference and whether that is what worth the money; rather than just keep the Mojo because someone tells you it's better. Can always return either one. Ideally best to have both at the same time, then you can get a fairer comparison; rather than have one at a time and rely on memory.

Whether to go for DAC for your headphones or a AV receiver for your speakers, I don't know. Depends which you use more.

Of course if you do get a Sanskrit and it's as much as you need from a DAC, that will save you £300 right there and will be a decent chunk of cash towards a new AV receiver.

I also bought the Mojo from amazon and was hard pushed to hear a massive difference between that and the SMSL M6 that I bought at the same time.
Sent the mojo back and have been happy with the SMSL as a dual purpose headphone amp and DAC for my HD650's since.

I am more looking in the schiit sub £200 for a usb/optical dac, but it is interesting that both this and the
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/am-i-audiophile-tone-deaf.18777645/ appear to suggest benefits of higher price DAC's not evident;
however they both seem to be in the headphone usage scenario , which I think of as less discriminating once in the ~£500-£1000 amp&speakers level ?

I currently predominately use a dedicated pc, PCI echo audio dac (no optical in); and the chromecast audio I picked up for £20, is competitive against it (and wireless)

I thought smsl do have some reliability/component quality concerns so was not considering them.

I'm still rocking my Schiit Modi, which cost me £80 when I bought it. I've tried more expensive DACs but I just don't hear enough of a difference to warrant the inflated prices.

Maybe it's just that my ears are worn out :D

I got a Muscial Fidelity v90 DAC and its great i have it plugged in via USB to my PC and the 3,5 mm jack to rca to my Ruark mr1's it also supports Hi Res 24/96 for Tidal and optical out great DAC for the money

Start low first, like others suggested from Schiit Modi upwards would be a more logical choice. Stop when you can't hear the difference or can't justify the difference anymore.

A typical stopping point would be Modi Multibit since the next jump in DAC quality results in quite a bit jump in price tag as well.

I had not realised the Tidal Master recordings are 24/96 - it seems I need to switch manually from 44.1khz on my dac control panel, and see if i hear the difference.
recently made some new 3.5mm rca cables with onyx 2025 twin as opposed to van damme xpe pro patch and think things improved, it is lower cap.

you meant optical in ? do you use the dac+Ruark's for tv optical sound, as opposed to an AVR ?

I am on a tidal high res trial, but, still annoyed it does not record a history of the music you browse too;
also some flac versions of tracks (not the Masters) are not necessarily the best ones and can be better with a utube 125Kb/s aac opus.

It's a good device. It depend on you of it's worth it or not.

It's not as good as a Modi Multibit + Vali 2 combo which is only a tad more expensive.
The thing with sound is your ears just adjust and I found that when comparing the Mojo to the MM and Vali2 was that it has a compressed, not very dynamic and impactful sound and found it a bit too expensive of you are going to add an amp down the road otherwise O just found it an alternative to the midranged Schiit Stacks.

The Philips X2 doesn't really scale and buying a good system is wasted on it unless you want to get something like a HD650 or 600, HD800 or Elear down the road.
