Had a great day on Cad west today. A few hawks, some Typhoons and a Herc. Photos to follow.

met some great people and learned a lot

So where do I go tomorrow. Dont want the hike to be too hard if pos or risking damage to my gear.

Sounds cool. I haven't been to any of the airshows that I intended to this year :(
I might have to travel up myself just so I can get some shots in this year!

Huge apologies for the delay. original post made from phone in anticipation that I would be able to get access to net from lappy while in Wales. needless to say I didn't.

Anyway, thanks for being patient.

In total 2 days of aviation photography. Please remember this is my first ever attempt at this style of photography and i've only had an SLR for just over a year or so. I've not shopped any of the images so they are as taken.

Day 1 CAD West. Mixed conditions. 2/3 good downpours. Not much activity early afternoon, but a fair bit later on.

First aviation picture ever taken was of a Hawk coming through. Light was really bad as a result of some thick cloud obscuring the sun. I like the way the HUDs and nose light are picked out.

Another Hawk later in the afternoon

A couple of typhoons came through which really made the day for me.

then this chap, who I was convinced wouldn't fit through the Valley. It honestly felt like you could have stepped onto the wing as it went past.

I had a Sigma 150-500 lens fitted which wouldn't go wide enough to get all the C-130 in when it was up close. Chap next to me was using a Cannon 100mm Prime which was still too big for it!!!

Day 2. Drove down to CAD west (1 hour) where it was sloshing it down and then decided to head up to Angle-sea (another 2 hours)

So after 3 hours driving I found my way to the North end of the Runway where quite a few were gathered. Quite a lot of activity as the Special forces were operating out of the field doing some training in the bay. Conditions were generally good with some downpours and the odd bit of blue sky, but generally grey skies.

Lots and lots of Hawks helping me develop my skills in panning and zooming as the came into land.

this chap came in out of a very dark sky in a real hurry.

And a few on the ground.

The Air sea rescue Sea-King

And a Merlin. I've got others of the aircraft itself but having seen the sign in front of me had a go at something a little bit different

Remember I mentioned the Special forces? wellthey were loading RIBs 2 at a time into a pair of Chinhhoks and heading off into the bay where they would land and partially submerge the load bay of the Chinhooks before driving the boats straight out the back.

last up is the last shot of the day, and the last of the aircraft in the sky. A Hawk banking round with the sun on it's belly.

So that was my first go at aviation photography, and I'm totally hooked. For all shots I used a Canon 60D with a Sigma 150-500. Lots to learn re shutter speeds for props and panning for fast jets etc. All feedback and advice appreciated.

Ahh you should have been at Valley on Thursday, the SBS were practising insertion & extraction from the chinooks. They fast roped in and then attatched themselves to the ropes for quick pull off the ground. You could see a string of them dangling mid-air while the chinnooks circled the camp at 80kts.

The visiting Merlin & Typhoon were for the 4FTS 100yr celebration yesterday. My son & I had a text that a spitfire had just landed, so we drove over and did a little visit. My 2yr old boy was overjoyed when we sat in the cargo of the sitting Merlin, especially since he has an Italeri model hanging on his ceiling. :)

Yeah heard about that, must've been pretty cool.

i was travelling back on the Saturday and desperately wanted to make a stop over for the events. Mrs Dubs however was quite keen to get home so we had to miss it.

Photographing the aircraft is a real learning curve though. A lot of images aren't as sharp as i'd like them to be although they do look better uncompressed. Partlythis I think is down to me and partly down to the lens. be nice to have one of those mega expensive canon L series.
