What a **** day.

Fitting new fence posts in my garden and managed to lose my wedding ring.

My guess is I pulled it off when I took my gloves off at some point.

Question for you metal detectors out there - if you were searching 20m square of a garden with a detector, what are the odds of finding a platinum wedding band?

It's insured, but i'd like to find it if possible!

mate of mine done the same thing at work, he got a metal detector and found it, I would think the probability of finding your is extremely high, given you know the area.

You should have a very high chance of success in such a small area unless it's in concrete under a fencepost. I'd read the instructions though, because there are different types of metal detector that work in somewhat different ways and can be set to respond to different results. You wouldn't want to miss it because the detector was set to ignore certain results because they're usually caused by uninteresting things. I don't know if that could happen with a platinum ring (or if it depended on the alloy, since platinum jewellery isn't 100% pure platinum), but I think it's something to consider as a possibility.

Good luck with it! I know I'd be absolutely gutted. As it is, I've had to change hands its on because when I wash my hands or go swimming it's always falling off.

Keep us posted.

It's amazing how many times you can look right past something when it's small and the background isn't uniform. If the metal detector doesn't find it, get organised and divide the area it could be in up into squares and search thoroughly each square then mark it off. Otherwise you'll just end up wandering about and following the same sub-conscious patterns that lead you to miss spots or dismiss searching somewhere thoroughly. It's 20 sq. m. You could walk around that for two hours and not see it, and then search by squares doing five minutes a square and have the whole area covered in an hour and forty minutes and probably find it in the first half-hour.

Also, watch out for magpies - they love bling!
