Nah writers only do the writing by the seat of their pants if the show their working on is in danger of being Canned
they have a arc, but the events in between are written only days before shooting .
the beginning , middle and end was written years ago.
creativity is creativity, whether made up as they go along or planned in advance. the former does not mean any less of a plot.

One of the writers claims to be an expert in time travel. I wonder how he can make that claim. I'll have to see if I can find that article.
i think its superb, every episode for me is as interesting as anyother, i love the characters and i love the complex plot, and i love they way it doesnt insult the viewers intelligence by trying to explain everything through obviuos plot reveals via dialogue.
