There's been rumors floating around for a while now, but looks like we finally going to get them in 4k releasing on December 1st this year. Following has also been confirmed:

"It's ground up 4K reconstructions. 4K scans of the OCN and 4K scans of the VFX film outs"

Cannot wait!!

I can't think of anything less appealing than extended versions of the Hobbit films.

The extended Hobbit versions are actually miles better than the original.

But do agree it never needed to be that long in the first place.

However someone called tolkieneditor did do a fan cut turning it into a single 4 hour cut.

I can't decide if to buy them yet or not. I already own them all on Apple TV so I am hoping they get the free 4k upgrade, as I want to see what this mega pack brings next year.

If I do buy them, I will just nab them from the WB site standard copies, as the code Welcome brings it down to £67.49.

Waiting to officially here if PS5 will support dolby vision and atmos for movies as well, as that will be my source of player.

My thoughts too. I am holding off from purchasing them on the ATV though incase they release a separate 4k version of each film. Very confused about that one. Hoping the PS5 does Atmos too for the reason you stated. I have a few UHD discs that I got free here but no player yet.

Apple do state they will upgrade their films to 4k, I suppose it's more if they can get the rights for this though. While I am sure someone will, it's more likely to be Amazon if it becomes a format war as they have the TV series coming and Amazon personally sucks I find for movies and no dolby vision.

I just don't want to drop £££ until I can find a bit more information on what this 2021 pack will have and likewise if the PS5 will do vision and atmos.

Otherwise I will just buy them bog standard 4k versions and rip them to MKV. Least that way I can play on my nvidia shield with vision and atmos and it won't mean switching disks halfway through the extended versions either.

If you own the films on Apple TV, the two towers has been upgraded, but the other two have not yet. Not sure why they randomly do this, happened with back to the future as well.

Obviously going to watch them on the disk version for the uncompressed audio etc, but couldn't help myself have a sneak peak and skip to the start of the battle of helm's deep. My oh my, it is absolutely beautiful, really feels like these are brand new modern 2020 films now! The sound as well even though dolby atmos (DD+ compressed) sounded superb when all the arrows were whizzing all over the show.

Can't wait for them to arrive now and make a day of it :D

All of them are on Apple TV in 4K now including The Hobbit trilogy.

Yeah, I can't justify watching these though on a streaming platform :p

I need the full dolby atmos true hd and not dd+ haha.

Also they are massive and there's quite a comparison on the streamed versions to the disks ones on a few reviews I've seen floating around.

Watched the first Hobbit tonight. Wife's never seen any of them, so may as well go in the story order. But my oh my does it look good and the sound is amazing. Playing them on a lg oledcx with a full Sonos arc setup. Super happy but looking forward to getting into the actual LOTR ones.

Watched second Hobbit last night. Might be one of the best 4k movies in terms of picture quality I've seen. Third one tonight, then next weekend will be LOTR :)

I ended up ripping the disks into MKV's and playing through my Nvidia shield. I've watched all the hobbits now and starting LOTR tomorrow. But means I won't have to swap the disks over on extended versions.

I tried one through the PS5 but wasn't getting Dolby Atmos either, so just sacked it off and went with the above option.

That's all 6 finished. Enjoyed every moment once again. Really felt like I was watching them again at the cinema for the first time. If you have a decent uhd TV and sound system and you're on the fence about getting these, trust me don't hesitate, they look and sound absolutely incredible.

While I don't hate Hobbit films like some people, I just find those a fun enjoyable watch. However LOTR extended versions really does feel like you are on a journey when you watch them. The wife had not see any of them and she actually got stuck in and enjoyed them as well. She wasn't too happy however how Sam isn't given more gratitude hahaha, but was a nice experience to actually see her enjoy them when I thought it could have gone the other way.

10/10 for me on all of them.
