LOTRO 9.2/10 - Destined to become the next big MMORPG

I don't take any notice of other peoples comments, I do read a few official reviews but in the end I'm going to make my own decision on whether or not it's any good on my own come the 24th.

What makes a review official? Wouldnt an official review be one done by the company about there own game?

End of the day the review from CVG is based upon the writers own feeling, or so we hope. I have the very suspect feeling that this review was paid for by Turbine tho.

Sorry to say but LotR is not a WoW beater.

I tend to listen to gaming sites and magazines, but I'm not too fussed what they say as I am still going to give it a bash and see what it's like.

WoW was a poor game, so I hope it's more enjoyable and not such a lifeless grindfest :(

/fingers crossed.

All MMO's are ultimately a grindfest

As long as LotRO has a little more of a enjoyable grind, it will be more worthwhile than WoW in my book.

Theres so many varied quests and things to do that you don't notice the grind.

Having played wow for 7 months and quit for a year and a half I have to say ROTLO has got me back into mmorpgs.

Monster play is cool aswell.....

From what I've seen it looks boring, the PvP element of it is poor and it's graphically not pleasing. Warhammer Online is the next mmorpg that looks interesting but we'll see..

I personally don't see it as a WOW clone, I played WOW for a while upon release and went back to it when Burning Crusade was launched and got bored after just a few days. I found the story and quests rather uninteresting.

Maybe it's just because I'm hopelessly in love with LOTR that makes the difference, always found the backstory to WOW a bit lacking, never really gripped me.

Just my opinion mind, 8 million subscribers can't all be wrong... heh.

the matrix is my fav film, boy was i dissapointed with mxo. WoW is 1000x the game mxo is, so i hope lotro doesnt dissapoint cause i love the books and the movies :)

I'd give the pre-order a go then. I'm really enjoying myself. The graphics certainly aren't pants, there's some good backstory so far, and it's pretty bug free.

Lot of wild statements popping up here with nothing to back them up. I smell a bandwagon.

Edit - quick pic. Yeah, those are some awfully dated graphics

looks nice might as well give it a go :)

Played a couple of weeks of LoTR online in the beta, on and off. And to be honest the only thing it had going for it was it was a bit more complete (content-wise) and less buggy than Vanguard (another one I beta'd)....so I guess that's not saying much really, lol

I don't think die-hard fans of LoTR are gonna enjoy it that much either in the long run as it hardly sticks to the lore of Middle Earth in a coherent/believable fashion, but that is probably inevitable since the original backstory/premise wasn't designed around a MMO. So a lot of artstic licence is unavoidable I guess.

I tried to like it, really I did...but at the end of the day its just another WoW/EQ2/etc wannabe parading itself in a Middle Earth packaging. You know, go kill 6 wolves here, 4 bandits there, ooh I just leveled up! etc

But hey, maybe I'm just jaded from playing too many of these games now ;) I'm waiting for some developer to truly break the mold and do something original.....but I might be waiting a while tho. As long as the WoW juggernaut keeps on truckin', we are gonna see many more similair online games try for cash & glory I guess.

I still play Guild Wars and occasionally subscribe for another month in Eve Online as these two are the only well populated games out there that dare to be a bit different from the norm. And what they offer is very well implemented. They don't suffer from incongruities as their fantasy/sci-fi settings are tailor made around the game itself.

Gave it a good run out in the Beta but have since uninstalled it and wont be buying the full game.

Main reason was that the combat system was awful, along with the laughable ripped off WoW UI, laggy servers and players that made WoW players look mature.

My prediction is that LOTRO will have a good honeymoon period lasting a few months and then fizzle out quickly as Warhammer, Age of Conan etc emerge and WoW continues to dominate. The 'lifetime subscription' screams out to me as a short term cash in.

With 8 million subscribers to WoW it was never going be anything else. When you have the rights to the most popular fantasy franchise ever, you make it as accessible to the existing playerbase as possible if you want to make money.

I don't actually think this is a good thing - I much prefer skill based systems like Ryzom and the old SWG. But as a Tolkien nut I still get a thrill out of what they've done with the material, even if it is Wow-centric.

Edit - I should probably add that this is all based on the hobbit / man starting area. The elf / dwarf one seemed a lot rougher and a lot less connected with the story.

Those saying the graphics are not up to par need to check out the new high res textures. Its almost on par with oblivion especially the water effects.
