Hey

Just started playing LOTRO - and need to choose a race and a class.

I am a newbie to this game so... have no idea what to pick.

Looking for a class that will output the most DPS in end-game content etc.

Also are there passive skills in LOTRO, e.g a race that gives an extra +DPS/AP?

What race/class should I pick?

I would prefer it to be a caster, if such thing exists :D if not, a melee/ranged would do.

Thanks!

I've just started playing lotro again. last time I played was over a year ago so I need to catch up with whats going on. Spent the whole night downloading the 9GB update though so I'm yet to actually "play" it again. Will start tonight!

The first character I played was a Champion and I remember it used to do some very nice damage. Not sure if race makes any difference to skills though, can't remember tbh.

Problem with choosing a DPS class is they're 2 to the penny in most MMOs. Which is why I re-rolled as a healer, hoping it would be easier to get into groups later on. Of course on the other hand there's a reason DPS classes are so popular and that's because they're fun to play.

Your best bet is to read this for a run down on classes - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18022279

If you want DPS then it depends what area of dps you want to go for, for all out melee then choose a man champion who can can duel wield at speed or can slug it out with a 2hander.

If you want ranged DPS then choose a hunter, fast paced ranged dps with an option for small aoe damage, can also debuff and crowd control.

If you want burst DPS at range with healing and crowd control then choose a rune keeper, hopefully up for a nerf soon due to being a little OP and thinking it's a tanking class!

My choice? Champion

The Hunter class is the primary nuker in lotro, so go with that for the highest single target damage output. There are a lot of them about, obviously, but it's an easy choice for a first toon, and has a lot of travel skills that make getting about easier.

Elves get a small bonus to bow damage, but you're better off going human, as they get a racial heal later on in the game that instantly heals for about 2/3 of your health bar. It makes some otherwise impossible mobs solo-able.

Champions are the melee dps class, but I've never played one so I'll let someone else fill you in on them :)

End game content has improved ten fold, each class is required for bosses or instances in a different way. Champions are required for more than pure dps now, we are needed to debuff with feral strikes, stop timed attacks or buffs with clobber, threat management with rising & ebbing ire, off tanking considerably well with or without a shield.

If you want to get into PVMP later on then roll a hunter for the pure fac tthat you can sit at the back of a raid and land rain of thorns on a creep raids head and then pick them off with autoshot which gives you silly amounts of reknown.

My champion is R8 and it takes a lot of spring + raging blade and death.

That's good to hear. That's exactly how it should be too. Every class having a purpose and having that feeling of importance in a group. I'm looking forward to doing some end-game. If I ever get there!

You should check out captain too, as it's a very different class to any other I've ever played in an mmo, and my personal favourite. Kind of buffer, backup healer, off tank, pet class. Fantastic in a group, and silly survivability.
