LoTRO...worth it?

Morning all, Seeing as i've now quit Aion for what seems to be the 100th time, I was thinking about trying LoTRO. (The client d/l is 10GB)

I was wondering if you guys think it's worth playing? As I love the LoTRverse, but I don't wanna get into another game with twinks and broken mechanics and nothing to do at endgame.

So riddle me this, should I get it? I just started summer holidays so I will be playing it pretty heavily while I wait for FFXIV and SW:TOR

As a game it never hooked me in the same way WoW did, but if still found it to be vastly superior.

Its a game that I wish I got into properly, i played it for a long time but never saw half of what was on offer. The community is mature, the graphics are stunning, and the depth of the story is obviously fantastic.

Had my nerdiest experience on it , while stood inside an inn listening to some guys playing guns and roses tracks on their lutes. I realised at that point i needed to get out more

I'd recommend it. Even if you are waiting for SW:TOR and/or FF14, you'll get some decent playtime out of this until then. It's a great game for anyone that's not done it before, highly enjoyable experience. I'm not sure how end game is these days though, but I know the "PvP" is still ass, although to be fair this was always more of a PvE from the start.

I'm half way through playing the free trial and so far I don't think I'll subscribe. Game play is very WoW like to me, with only a few small differences. The quests seem interesting and quite deep in places, I especially enjoy the "epic" quest line. Also I heard that it's going to be a free to play game later this year right?

btw, whats up with the graphics? I had a choice of downloading a low res version or the HD version of the free trial. I chose the HD version (almost 10gb's!) but the graphics still look absolutely awful. It looks worse than WoW, even on the ultra high settings with DX10. Is this because of the free trial?

Have to say when i tried the trial a while back, i thought the graphics were distinctly average at best as well mate.

Unless you have the graphics setting on low you need your eyes checked if you think WoW looks better :confused:

The "HD" version just has the textures for the very high setting, nothing HD about it.

that's pretty damn awesome. What classes would you guys recommend playing? Since it's mostly PvE I guess it'd be pretty balanced, but are their any you'd recommend avoiding (ie totally gimped or useless)

Hunter is a good starter class, lots of fun and easy enough to play. None of them are particularly gimped though, all have very different playstyles and are needed to some extent in groups.

As to the graphics, yeah, distinctly average and not as good as Wow

Maybe its the trial, couldnt say for sure. Certainly the graphics when I see them look absolutely stunning in places.

Stuff like this..its not Crysis of course, but its pretty for an MMO certainly not what I would call absolutely awful anyway. I've not used the trial client so couldnt tell you if its that, but does yours look anything like this?

There must be a downgrade in the free trial or something because it seriously looks like WoW graphics. I've repeatedly gone through graphics options and everything is on very/ultra high. The model of my character reminds me of Morrowind at times. The backgrounds are not detailed like these pictures, they're blurred and the tree's and foliage look like cardboard. And the buildings look like I've just stepped into WoW.

Hmm, maybe it is the trial client then. Couldnt tell you I'm afraid as I've never used the trial.

Did you download the 10gig client? Got a feeling there's one that's only 3 or 4 gig in size.

From their FAQ:
I heard that LOTRO had great graphics. Why does the trial look worse than the screenshots on your site?
LOTRO does have great graphics on most systems – they just take a while to download. To get you into the game more quickly, initial areas (character generation and the tutorial instances) are displayed with lower-resolution textures and less detail. However, once the complete game has downloaded (the full 12GB, not just the first segments) you will be able to adjust your graphics settings higher.
