I've unplugged every phone in the house and tried a few phone and filter combos in the the master socket. Really noisey and the net has dropped a few times tonight, which I think may be linked.

Also the phones rather than ringing normally are doing a constant single long ring.

Any one else experienced this sort of problem? BT charge like £100 to come out so I'm hoping that can be avoided

Phone BT and ask them to run a line test. That should let you know if it's a problem on the line or internally. Does your master socket have a removable bottomsection to expose a test socket? Google NTE5 socket to see what one looks like.

Hi Benj,

BT should only charge if the fault is proved off their network. If you can plug an SLT directly into the socket and still hear noise, and you have eliminated any extensions / internal cabling problems, you should be fine in regards to charges.

Hi mate, if it's any consolation we've been having problems, and we're in Gungrog Hill area. I think it's related to the new one-way system!

Did you unscrew the faceplate on the master socket and plug the phone into the "test" socket behind?

That would completely eliminate your internal wireing and you should then avoid a charge.

This,

I have the same problem atm, causing my line to sync at 2mbps rather than the 18mbps i usually get.

Unscrew the master socket, plug an analogue phone in to test socket (without filter!) Dial 17070, press option 2 for a quiet line test, it should be completely silent, if there is noise/crackling, call your line provider and log a fault, DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING TO DO WITH BROADBAND AS THEY WILL TELL YOU TO CALL YOUR ISP, just tell them you are getting a noisy line when making voice calls.

Cheers for the responses folks. I took the front off the master socket and used the test socket (Wish I knew this was possible before running round the house unplugging and plugging in phones lol).

Did all the tests online via the bt website. It's been diagnosed as a problem their end and they aim to fix it within 3 days.
