Currently have a 3200+ venice, 1gb corsair ram, AMD A8V mobo, radeon 9550.
Tried overclocking it but failed miserably due to the mobo.
was told to buy a MSI K8N Neo2 platinum, but no real success.
However I just bought this for 120
AMD Athlon 3000+
Motherboard MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (USED) + Drivers + Manual
NEW OEM AMD Atlon 64 939 socket
1GB DDR 400 Memory 2*512mb (Just Few Hours Of Use)
Geforce FX5200 AGP 8X 128MB (USED)
x1 IDE Cable (NEW)
x1 SATA Silicon Cable (NEW)
x1 SATA Power Cable (NEW)
PSU 500W (USED)
Motherboard Conectores metal plaque for case.

First of all, was it worth it?

Secondly, Im planning on taking this new mobo and putting the gig of corsair RAM i have at the moment in it, is this possible? I assumed that because they are both 939 it was.
Also plan on putting the 3200+ venice processor onto the mobo and maybe the graphics card if the radeon 9550 is better than the geforce fx5200

If this is possible I will be taking pictures once recieved and hopefully get some help on how to arrange things, First time doing anything with hardware.

Oh and there is no heatsink on the 3000+ processor, I figured that doesn't matter if im putting the 3200+ in?

Thanks a lot, im kinda excited with this, hope it works and hope i wasn't ripped off

For 120 quid I've seen a lot worse, the RAM, Mobo and chip are worth a fair bit of that. What you might want to do is flog off the mobo still though and get a PCI-E one, because if you want to upgrade GPU wise, you're going to be limited a lot in price by AGP.

However if you want to stick with what you go, not too bad, and Im sure you can strip and sell off components you dont want.

The 9550 is a fair bit quicker than the fx5200 though, that cards a joke for much more than basic workstation stuff.

Well the reason i bought that mobo was because the one i have at the moment (A8V) doesn't really allow overclocking, there's no HT multiplier or something like that.
Was hoping to get it so my main computer looks like this
K8N Neo2
2gb ram
radeon 9550 (soon be upgrading this)
500w PSU
3200+ venice (will want to OC this a little)

Which would leave
Asus a8v
0 ram (would buy a cheap gig)
geforce fx5200
3000+ not sure model
not sure what current psu is, but 500w is most definatly better than it

Is this possible thats the main problem, I just saw the mobo and bought it :s

yeah I'd ditch that FX5200 and just use your 9550. Try OC both CPU and just sell the one that overclocks less.

Yes you can just use the HSF for your old 3200+.

£120 for all that is good value if you just want a spare rig, but in your case really you're just paying for that extra gig of RAM, more ocable mobo and perhaps a more ocable CPU

BTW what is the brand for that 500W??

Well having a second (average) PC would be nice, got a few old ones lying around, but if the 3000 is just below the 3200 it should be ok for lan on some strategy games. just noticed that it doesn't come with a hard drive, not expensive though I guess.

Will find out what the PSU is, it doesn't say, but thats the picture although It looks like any other PSU to me heh.
Will be posting pictures of the two in a day, would like a little help if possible, I figure its just put this in that slot etc, but i've never done it before :)

Tried overclocking it but failed miserably due to the mobo.

Never had a problem clocking on the A8V, good solid AGP mobo.. Got a 3500+ upto 2.5 nicely on stock cooler.

Make sure you are using the 1009 bios I think it is. The newer ones don't have the overclocking features.

Chris.

Parts arrived today, took my computer apart, figured i'm a bit out of my depth, think ive put the ram in correctly, removed the chip and put the 3200+ in.

Just fixed mobo to the case, noticed that the new 500w PSU wont fit in the case, will the old 300w cope? note that there is now 2gb ram in, a 1gig stick and two 512's.

Also figured i'd ask on how to wire it all up, is it an obvious job ie all the pins match up so you cant go wrong, or do certain things not match up?
Took some pictures on a phone, will be posted soon

No manual come with that motherboard? If not i take it you havn't looked for one on the web as a pdf?

I have a K8T Neo board as well and i have to say, its pretty pants for overclocking. Might just be mine but i'm not fussed either way.

Mobo didnt come with a manual, i could look one up though, is this going to be a difficult process for a novice?

I guess theres only one way to find out. ;) Most of the connectors only fit a certain way round though, they usually have little flaps or sticking out bits on different sides to ensure they only fit one way.

Once the graphics card, ram, hard drives and cd drive are plugged in, its just the processor to fit. Although actually i'd do the processor first, then ram then drives and lastly graphics.

If the 500W PSU doesnt work try using the old 300W one and fitting a small amount (512mb) ram, a single dvd drive, single hard drive and the new GFX card... this way it should be more likely to run it. You can always add components one at a time to it if you'll feel more confident that way.

Thanks.

I figure 300w should run it, its just another gig of ram, however I guess overclocking it will be limited, right?

I'll buy a case after xmas i guess.
Thanks for the help everyone, ho ho ho! heh. :)

Does anyone know the site showing how big the PSU needs to be?
Not sure if the 300w will cope with the new mobo and an extra 2x512mb ram sticks.

Any idea what case i should get for this? I know a good one isnt needed, but it needs to house the 500w one and be a reasonable price, dont want to be spending a big budget on a small (but probably big performance wise) upgrade
Also figured that even if 300w is enough, it wouldn't be for OCing?

Extreme PSU calculator is what you are looking for:

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp

A decent 300W is a enough, but OC will be limited. For the case I think Lian Li PC-7 is really good value, just got mine today (supposed to be here last Friday  )

So, I officially fail at life.

Didn't want to mess with the PSU cables as i dont know where they go, paid £30 to get it done.

The guy also said that a '400W Ezcool' PSU would be better than the no name 500w one, has anyone heard of this brand?
