Lots of strings, lots of tunings!

Hi all, i was just wondering if anyone knows of bands that use very different or extreme tunings.

I was looking at a guitar site the other day and noticed they had a 8 string electric guitar. Anyone know of any bands which use them?

I know wes borland used a mixture of bass and guitar strings on the same guitar when writing Nookie.

It would be great if people could put forward their knowledge of such bands/tunings! as im always looking to find new and exciting ways to play.

Was the 8 string an Ibanez? That's just come out this year if yes, Meshugga make heavy (boom-boom) use of the 8 string, the extra string added over a regular 7th string (which is a low B) is a low F#, that's looow.

Open G is quite a nice tuning to play with. Try making an open tuning then try to make up some chord shapes - you might hit something nice and jangly.

A lot of Michael Hedges tracks make excellent use of different tuning, providing open notes that would otherwise be inaccessible - he was REALLY great

Led Zeppelin and Status Quo use a lot of different tunings and thats why its not that easy to play their stuff correctly.

We (www.myspace.com/thefalltherise) use some different tuning on our songs.

Our album was written in drop D but with the G tuned up to A so:
D,A, D, A, B, E
You can get some lovely sounds from that.

The new tuning we're using is rather nifty tho.
Tune the bottom three from D,A,D to:
B, F (i think), B

Then tune the high 3 from G,B,E to:
B, C#, E (leave this the same)

This produces some mean chords....

I love finding new cool tunings like that.

If i remember right Presidents of the USA used Guitbass' or basitars or something.
6 string guitar modified to accomodate 2 bass strings too. They used to have some really cool sounding stuff.

I used to know a guy who played a Celloblaster...I can't find any info on them online though - looks like Penta Systems has (surprise surprise

) gone nipples-skyward...

Basically it's a five-string guitar, tuned in fifths.

One-finger power chords...

He used a kinky mix of FAT guitar strings and dropped two entire octaves.

Not spoken to him in a while...He moved to Notts to chase his doom-metal dream...30bpm, eighteen minute long tracks...
