Loud Liang DDC

Hi all,

I've got a Liang DDC pump in my watercooling loop.

The loop goes like this: Res -> Pump -> GPU -> CPU -> Rad -> Res.

Like this:

It makes an annoying buzzing sound, that's by far and away the loudest thing in the case.

It has the XSPC clear top on it, and I've already tried loosening the screws slightly, which didn't make any difference.

It's mounted on foam pads, and holding it (and anything else that might vibrate) makes no difference either.

Reading around, it appears that the only other thing it might be is that the flow rate is too high, so everything is spinning fast and making a racket.

Components list:
CPU: Alphacool NexXos Highflow AM2
GPU: EK Waterblocks GTX470
Res: Danger Den Rad (which, incidentally, I wouldn't recommend)
Rad: Thermochill 120.3
Pump: Liang DDC 18W

If they are just 'naturally loud', then what would people suggest as good alternatives, considering I may add another GTX470 to the loop later, and the pump needs to retain its current position (so the replacement would need a vertical intake and horizontal outflow).

Thanks

Have you tried putting a bit of cloth or something underneath it to stop it vibrating against the case?

edit: sorry didn't see the bit in your post the picture looks like there is nothing underneath.

It's thick double-sided tape under it. Though I've also tried removing that and holding it, with no difference...

Oh, and it's definitely the pump (it was loud when leak testing, and obviously nothing else is on at that point)

I don't know what to suggest then mate I'm not really an expert when it comes to watercooling but I've got an 18W Laing pump and it's not audible at all after the air pockets were cleared and I'd put a bit of cushioning underneath (to stop case vibration).

i have four of these pumps in my mountain mods ascension duality case and ive had a soimilar issue with one of them. These are magnetic motor drives so it sounds like the pump is faulty. There are only two reasons a pump makes aloud noise

Air bubbles: makes agrinding sound
Incorrectly mounted

I feared that might be it.

Can't say it's air bubbles. I've got clear tubing, and I just cannot see any.

And, certainly according to the DDC manual it's mounted in the best way possible, so not sure.

Thanks for suggestions so far. I got it from the MM so getting a new pump will be difficult.

Any suggestions for a different pump?

I am thinking of simply getting another. I am unable to find another pump that has the layout I need (top inlet, side outlet).

the DDC pumps can be loud when not mounted on anti vibration pads or velcro etc but you do have (what looks like) a Lian Li. Which sound like vibrators when they have a lot of pumps/HDDs :P

I've had a few DDCs in the past, some of which have been almost silent, and another which emitted an annoying buzzing sound however mounted. its the only pump I've ever owned that failed, that one emitted a buzzing sound for a few weeks before dying.

Looks like you have room for a Laing D5 in your case and that might also fit your config. They're virtually inaudible and the variable speed control helps.

Hold the pump in your hand, does it make a noise now? If so you have air in your loop most likely. If its silent then you have vibration issues.

The pump should be near as damn it silent when running so if it is vibration, try suspending the pump via elastic bands in a HD slot, another option is to use an alphacool top and fit it to a hard drive slot using an anti vibration dampening set (4 screws with rubber grommets). I would be hesitant on having the pump sitting on any sort of pad, velco/gel or otherwise and the magneto motor gets hot and needs as much ventilation as possible.

Heres a pic of my old pumps with mounts:

or this way in your case?

Hope this helps.

Hmm, food for thought. It is definitely a buzzing sound, that is not alleviated when I hold the pump.

It has always been there, from first powering up the pump for leak testing. I don't think there are any air bubbles - I cannot see any in the loop (everything is see-through). Is there a method for getting rid of air bubbles in the pump? Just remove the top of the reservoir and hope the air bleeds out or something?

Also, I had thought about a D5, but the outlet is up, which would go straight into the res, which is probably not the way to do things
