Loud Noise

Hi,

I brought my Son the Proton Cobalt Mini ITX Gaming PC a year or so ago, it came with a Sapphire Radeon 2048MB Graphics Card.

Was walking past his bedroom last night and it sounded like an airplane was taking off.

Poked my head round the door and he was in the middle of a game of CSGo with his headphones on, blissfully unaware of the noise.

Is there anything I can do to make it run a little quieter ? Any advice greatly appreciated !

Have a quick peep inside the case, could have a lot of dust built up, if so grab a compressed air can and give it all a good blow out.

Have alook at his gaming temps if they are resonable try setting a fan profile for the gpu and cpu and case fans.

The cheapest and free way to do this (and assuming it's the video card) would be setting up a custom fan profile using MSI Afterburner. Find a level you comfortable with (I would suggest a limiting the top end to 70% to start with and work down) and testing it to see what happens to temperatures.

If it's the CPU, what CPU cooler do you have in it? If it's the stock cooler then no wonder it's loud, replace it with something better.

The problem is airflow with a case like yours (or with small cases in general), if a custom fan profile leaves the system to hot and crashes due to overheating see if you can get some extra case fans fitted to increase airflow around all your components.

Edit:

Just one other thought, AMD has a frame limiter in their driver software. If you set this up (say 60 FPS which should be easy for even for light systems in CSGO) the card will use power tune to reduce the amount of energy it uses which will in turn reduce heat and noise. And as above give it a good clean.

What type of fan does the GPU have? If it's a squirrel cage type fan, they can become notoriously noisy. Bladed fans are generally a lot quieter. I suspect the GPU is the culprit here, seeing as you noticed the noise while your son was gaming. I'd take a can of compressed air to the GPU if I were you. You might be able to do a better job of cleaning it if you disassemble it and open it up, but that would be a lot of hassle.
