Loud PSU fan noise after installing 780Ti

Hi all,

Having just installed a OcUK GeForce GTX 780Ti my Antec NeoECO 620C PSU is now making incredibly loud fan noise when under load.

It is a 620w 80+ Bronze supply and the 780Ti needs a 600w PSU with a 250w max draw, I assumed this combination would play well together.

Under old games (such as EVE Online) the fan speed is fine, however under Cities Skylines the PSU fan goes flat out, even though GPU load is ~55%.

This is the GPU-Z readout for two short sessions of Cities Skylines: Linky. VRel is the main limiting factor, and sometimes VOp as well.

I'm hoping someone has some experience of this? I am guessing I probably just need a new more powerful PSU.

Thanks!

Are you 100% sure its the PSU fan?

Just looked around and its from 2011'ish and has 48amps on the 12V rail, made by Seasonic, its not crap by any means.

I'm fairly certain it's the PSU. I manually turned the graphics card fan up to 70% (well above the level it gets to under load) while the PC was idling and it sounded very different to this. And the good old ear next to the PSU test yielded the same results :(

Ummm.

I guess I think you know what this means.

Ironic when you see these selling points,

120 mm DBB Silence - Whisper-quiet high-quality double ball bearing fan with long lifetime
Thermal Manager - An advanced low voltage fan control for optimal heat & noise management

Hi all,

This is the GPU-Z readout for two short sessions of Cities Skylines: Linky. VRel is the main limiting factor, and sometimes VOp as well.

This isnt related to the PSU,this just how the card manages Boost,it only clocks up properly when it needs too(GPUusage increases)

Your PSU is working fine, the odds are the fan is just dodgy and its more noticabile now as it ramps up more due to higher overall system Power consumption/draw

Annoying for sure but no need to urgently rush out to replace the PSU

When did you buy it? wonder if there is any warranty remaining, it came with a 3yr warranty according to the Antec site.

Oh and check the cables especially the kettle lead are in fully.

I bought it from OCUK in December 2013, but is it possible I'm just overloading it and there isn't actually anything wrong with it?

I kind of panicked when I heard the noises and I'm a bit scared to test it again to see if I can recreate it!

Crackling sound isnt certainly normal.

but a lose keetle mains lead into the PSU can cause that.

So can the fan catching something. You could use a mains watt meter to get a good idea of the power draw whilst using the GPU. It could be on its way out for sure.

Another option which I cannot condone is to detach the PSU from the main and PC for a good while (overnight). Remove the cover and blow/suck out all the dust/carp that has accumulated over time. You can also inspect the PCB and components to see for any signs of damaged components.

I have not advised you do this btw ;)

Thank you for the help :) I had a look and the kettle cables were connected fine (there are two connections on the Prodigy M case). With my lack of technical prowess I don't think I can try your suggestions Th0nt

I certainly can't live with the level of noise it was generating as the PC is in the the living room... PSU upgrade time it is :)

Given the size of my case the PSU can be max 150x86x160 dimensions - from a browse of OCUK my options seem to be:-

Corsair Builder Series CX 850w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
BitFenix Fury 750W Gold Modular Power Supply

Most of the higher power PSUs seem to be over 160mm in depth!

That 760w Seasonic looks very nice, but it is slightly out of my price range as I wan't planning a PSU upgrade at all... although I understand my case does limit things somewhat and quibbling over £50 on such an important component seems silly!

Are the ones I linked going to be garbage?

The Neo Eco 620 is based on Seasonics S12-II 620 platform and we have had several reports on here of that platform being very noisey under load.

The two units you linked too are not particularly good. The Corsair has cheap internals and the Bitfenix is a mediocre psu that you are paying extra for the cables.

The Superflower Golden Green HX750w semi-modular is on offer but ends later this morning and is 145mm(L) x 150mm(W) x 86mm(H). It may be semi-modular but you will be using the hard wired cables anyway.

The EVGA Supernova GS 650w is a Seasonic built unit based on their G series and is a very good unit. It also has a hybrid fan mode. Size is 86mm (H) x 150mm (W) x 150mm (L).

Ordered the Superflower :) looks perfect for me - and the reduced size will make things more roomy in my small case.

Thanks to everyone for the help!

Hey guys can prozn use one pice cable with two terminations on the 780ti superflower do this with their cables he just wants to know if it will deliver enough power on a somhle cable.
