Loudness for windows?

I've been woundering, is there a similair option somewhere in windows media player or a plugin to have the kind of loudness like on amps or in car stereos?

Or perhaps an option to make music more dynamic: Silent stuff more silent, loud stuff (especially the middle and high tones) louder? All I see in wmp is an option to do the exact opposite, make music less dynamic.

Is there any plugin to make music more dynamic or add loudness ?

If you get Media Player Classic you can increase the gain of Audio which will make it louder.

Don't the "lossy" formats apply dynamic compression? The lower the bit rate the more compression applied. I think.

Try ripping to WMP lossless - you should get the same dynamic range as in the original CD.

"Loudness" basically is an EQ setting that looks like a smile or a U. It boosts the treble and the bass and as such recesses the mid-range. "Soft rock" preset on WinAmp is basically the same setting.
