been using it now for 6 months, and since SP1 it has been rock solid for me, always hearing so much moaning about it, mainly from people who have not given it ago. To be honest having both a laptop and a pc running vista makes a big diffirence, making the switch on the laptop front was a big thing, when i do go back to XP it looks and feels bad now.

anyway just wanted a pro vista thread for a change!

the only negatives for me are..

forever expanding Windows dir size
lack of classic search (it has it's uses)
screwed audio in games (at the moment, until all drivers are sorted out)

i use it on my work machine, and love the folder navigations etc, and the start quick bar.

but for my gaming machine, xp64 stays on it, flawless audio performance in all games :)

It is a nice OS but, for me, XP 64 is my preferred choice.
Vista is slower that XP in the games that I play and, apart from the search feature in Vista, I have found it to not be as responsive in every day use as XP. YMMV.
I have had Vista installed on a drive for a long time and gave up on it until SP1 was released. A fresh format of Vista with SP1 and I was quite pleased but even though I used it exclusively for a lengthy period of time the FPS penalty compared to XP, and I didn't find much else with Vista to compel me to stay, has persuaded me go back to XP 64.
Only yesterday I finally formatted the Vista drive as I can't see myself going back to it any time soon.
Performance wise I have been pleased to note that XP64 gives me the same results as XP32.

I understand that there are other measures that can apply when evaluating an OS but XP 64 delivers everything that I want.

Glad that it works well for the OP though, as it seems to do for many people :)

i found when i had both xp and vista i was forever wondering if i should go with one or the other, making the full step to vista have made things work better, as i have no other choice, some old software that i liked and used had to go, but others have taken there place.

eventually, Dx10 will force me to upgrade, at the moment i've got an 8800gt, which doesn't really cut it in games @ dx10, i prefer the high fps of dx9 at the moment :)

Performance is fine for me apart from the really terrible Creative audio drivers. Why is the volume so low?

Do people install Creative drivers backwards? Never been a problem for me (even less chance of a problem now as I set fire to the front panel module). And I much prefer Vista to XP, no noticable difference in gameplay. But I never run the benchmarks so dunno if the FPS drops.

sound in vista itself is fine now, but in games you have to run extra programs to emulate 3d sound, it's far from perfect, like the xfi alchemy for creative.

in xp64 it 'just works' with all titles

the xonar is better, but still has titles it doesn't support fully

you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise!

Don't be so anal :)

We were discussing the issues within Vista about sound. Perfectly on topic.

Alchemy is no big deal, except for adding a new game once, I never know it is there.

I really didn't want to upgrade to Vista, but since I was buying a computer I thought 'screw it' and ordered Vista 64.

Runs like a dream and haven't had a problem since. Also looks quite nice :)

Not anal, just accurate, and the new Titanium is said to be a match for it in Audio/Music.

I game so I use Creative.
