Low 2D performance

My new build (details below) is giving me, in the Windows 7 performance index, a 2.5 for 2D desktop performance for Aero, but 4.5 for 3D performance.

I know I am running integrated graphics, but most laptops seem to score higher than this for 2D and I am a bit unsure why it is not similar to the 3D performance. Latest drivers.

MB is an ASUS M4A785TD-V.

Seems to run fine with Aero BTW!

I have the same motherboard and score 4.7 for 'Desktop Performance for Windows Aero'. I also use the IGP. Although having said that I am pretty sure I overclocked the graphics using GPU NOS before running the test so that might have bumped it up a bit.

But the reason I say interesting is that despite having a fine score I have been having periodic problems with the 2D graphics performance. I sometimes have problems playing 1080p content (goes stuttery / audio and video out of sync - classic symptoms of graphics not being up to the job) although the hd4200 should have no trouble at all with hd content.

I wonder if the 2D performance fluctuates or something. Have you tried rerunning the performance index and seeing it it improves?

Also have you tried feeling the heat sync to see how hot it is? It might be that you have inadequate case cooling...? My stuttering problems stopped after I changed my case fan set up (although that might be a coincidence).

Failing all of this the GPU NOS program is quite good and has allowed me to get a pretty decent overclock out of the IGP. Enough to play new games with low res at decent frame rates. Might be worth having a play with that. Do keep finger checking the heat sink though. It would be quite easy to overheat it I think.

Are there any other HD4200 users out there? What performance scores are people getting? Big.Wayne I know you use one. :)

Hello username7 & eddyc,

I am using a 785G board featuring a Radeon HD4200 IGP but sadly I'm still using Windows XP Pro so can't really shed any light on your Windows 7 glitches? . . . under XP everything functions as expected and no issues to report!

I did a build for a friend/client using an Asus M4A89GTD PRO running Win7 x64 and didn't have any problems then or since . . . my mate would call me up if there was any glitches! :D

I kept a screen grab of his Windows performance index results . . . not sure how much help it will be as its a different IGP and on an overclocked system! . . . certainly no disparity between 2D and 3D results like what username7 is experiencing :confused:

The only real thing I can think of is perhaps a driver issue or perhaps something is over-heating? . . . . sorry not much help here! :o
 
Unless you're experiencing problems, I'd ignore it. The performance index isn't very representative, especially on higher end hardware.
