i've been looking at the conroe specs in oc shop, they all have relativily low clock speeds in relation to p4's etc, im assuming they are going to similarly good clockers like pentium D's?

Simply put if your're a gamer and are looking for a new rig.

You'd be crazy not to get a Intel Core 2 E6600.

I don't really see the point of the E6400, i mean it has the same cache as the E6300 so you might as well get one of those and overclock it to the 6400.

Same as pretty much every set of cpu's ever.

the e6400 has a higher multi than the e6300 and these cpu's will be fsb starved so a higher multi will help. as for the OP the old netburst of p4's was awful and required high clocks to match amd however now they scrapped the netburst they can get higher performance from lower clocks like AMD have been doing.

A real noob question here

How do the Conroe's relate to actual clock speed? Say for example I was using a 4400 amd dual core what would a faster Conroe equate to? (if this makes sense) Thank you :) I suppose what does a 2.6 ghz conroe mean?

a 2.6ghz conroe beats an fx 60 clocked to 2.8ghz in every test I hav seen.
so imagine one running at 3.6ghz

That system is oing to fly!

The crap systems Dell and the like churn out are going to be faster then my own.

now thats depressing

Nah, they'll still cripple them by sticking in 256mb of the slowest, cheapest DDR2 RAM they can get their hands on. :D

Im still sticking with my trusty Opty. Plenty fast enough for me atm.
I would rather spend the money on something else tbh, I want a new case. :)

I love my opty!

but shaving 12 mins off 32mb super pi at 250 quid is to good to miss.Conroe at 2.4ghz

250 quid is nothing for the massive performance gain.

never mind when I clock this E6600 to 3.6ghz!

once i bench i will getover the fact of loosing my opty 170 @2.8ghz @1.36v

As dylan said,"the times they are a changin"!

The new Intel processors have lower clock frequencies for the same reason AMD processors have for years now, they have much more efficient architecture than the last few generations of Intel processors, and can do a lot more work with a lot less muscle.

This, of course, means that they will hopefully overclock like mad. Results so far are more than impressive. :)
