Low Core Clock (Metro LL)

Just reinstalled Metro LL as i got a free copy of the "Complete Edition" from a friend. I previously had both Metro and Last Light and had pretty good performance in both games on WIN7 certainly very playable and still nice looking.... until tonight.

I loaded up the game and all was well, I set my favoured controls set Graphics to Default 1920x1080 with no Vsync.

The game loads into first cut scene and it runs smoothly and i took control of my guy and just glimpsed out of the corner of my eye the MSI overlay stating:

Mem - 1275Mhz (bouncing down to 150Mhz for a split second here and there)

Core - (constantly fluctuating between about 400Mhz and 600Mhz)

Spat half a glass of coke across my desktop eyes on stalks... the usual reaction :p

I restarted the game just in case... Continue the game and the Core is now at 1080Mhz dropping slowly at first to about 1000Mhz then all the way back down to the earlier 400ish Mhz within about 2 mins (just as i typed this bit Display driver crashed and recovered very quickly) I am not sure what the issue is but it feels driver related or i ticked a setting or something stupid

Here is what i'm playing on

i7 4770k Stock
8GB DDR3 1600
R9 290 1080/1275 power +50 OC profile (have tried stock too)
1200w PSU
Win 8.1 Case temp is 22c, GPU temp is 38C idle and about 60C in Metro

This is a fresh installation of Windows OS 8.1 and barring MSI afterburner and Driver 14.4 it is barebones programwise.

Any ideas? I feel like I'm missing something ... ticked the wrong box or enabled a setting by mistake? metro options are pretty basic so it can't be them and I've checked them and double checked them and they all are as they should be

When i run Heaven it's fine, i'm hitting my usual scores and avg max fps etc .... just can't work out what it is with metro.

Advice is much appreciated though I'm not after opinions on the merits or flaws of the 290 or AMD .. I'm well aware of them ;)

Don't the specific solution to your issue, but one thing I would say is that Metro series is not game that I would play with the CPU at stock clock...as they are known to be quite CPU demanding as well.

As for "Display driver crashed and recovered very quickly", pretty sure your current overclock is not stable...probably stock voltage might not be enough to hold core clock at 1080MHz for Metro...

I was playing this game on an i5 2500 @stock 3.3Ghz on the same card just fine only 1 month ago. I have also used these same settings on the OC since i got the card this is the only game that i have had this on again since i got this card.

Everything else i have tried shows no issues. Sniper Elite 3 is also fine i just tested that and Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 all fine great fps and no clock droop.... It seem slimited to Metro apart from that display driver crash.

I'm going to try the 14.6 and 14.7 drivers later as i have not used them with win 8 yet as they were utter tripe when i did on win 7. If that doesn't fix i'll probably just play something else ....
