Hi all, excuse my ignorance but i have not done much in the way of OCing since my old P4 days.

Can someone suggest a list of kit including C2D for me to OC to a decent performance level please.

Must be PCI E and I have monitor, GFX, HD, Soundcard and optical already.

I'm looking for the best bang per buck ideally

Thanks in advance for helping an old time OCer who is a bit lost with recent developments.

Would like at least 2Gb ram

HI,

heres for starters top end of you're budget, could easily swap the 6600 for one of the lower processors (2160/4500/6550) without losing too much performance :

Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) £26.99 (£31.71)

Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3P (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £84.99 (£99.86)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £124.99 (£146.86)

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) £56.99 (£66.96)

Sub Total : £293.96
Shipping : £8.25
VAT : £52.89
Total : £355.10

and the cooler for OCing:

£26.99
£31.71 inc VAT

Damn...beaten

Go cheap spend the rest on something else. a quad will be idle for u mose of the time.

Id say thats almost always the case. But i still agree with getting a cheaper CPU, either the E2140 or E2160 would be fine.

Gigabyte boards also situate the cpu in a such a place that big heatsinks can cause problems. check it out first.

Hahahaha pedobear sig, epic :D

Sorry for being off topic, but as said you'll get what you want for £400 no problem.

GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB6400C5DC) £164.99
(£193.86)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99
(£58.74)
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Heatsink (Socket AM2/LGA775) £27.99
(£32.89)
Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard £69.99
(£82.24)
Sub Total : £312.96
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £8.25
VAT is being charged at 17.5% VAT : £56.21
Total : £377.42

Then add the 120mm fan of your choice, should be fine for 3.6ghz and you have the added bonus of having 4GB of ram (useful for Vista and future games).

I think 3.6ghz on a e2160 is maybe a little hopefull! I think it would need a very good chip to achive that, so if he is lucky then it might.

I meant the motherboard, ram and cooling rather than the chip itself, but some can do 3.6. Around 3.3 would be more realistic I suppose.

Or better yet swap the 6600 for a faster 6750 which is also cheaper.

Id agree with that, but 3.2ghz is pretty common, havnt heard reports of anone failing to manage 3ghz on an e21**.
