Low FPS

Hi All,

i seem to be having issues with fps since i added my new gpu to my rig. My spec is as follows;

i7-4770 - Z87 - 8gb - gigabyte geforce 780ti Windforce and a seagate psu.

Ive tested the following games;

B4 - load up i get 60 fps, in game between 30 and 50 on max settings. ive turned v-sync off in game and through control panel. Ive read i should be getting plenty more?

ACBF - Again, load up is around 60 fps. However, in game is below 30 and as low as single digits. Again, have tried with v-sync off in game and through control panel.

Titanfall - Had loads of fps on load up and around 40 to 60 in game.

Surely i should be getting more than this? ive spent nearly £2000 on my upgrade now and expected things to run smoothly for a while.

Also, loading screens are incredibly slow. Titanfall for example took nearly 5 mins to load. when i finally got in game i was already well behind on scores.

Have done benchmark test on Heaven Benchmark 4.0 and my highest score was 1100. looked up similar spec pc and they had nearly 2000.

Have you tried using MSI afterburner to check GPU and CPU clocks when in game?

Not tried this yet, have put it on my list of things to look into tonight while testing.

Unistall your graphics drivers, delete all left over folders and do a clean install of the latest betas.

Any idea where the folders will be located or shall I do a google search?

You haven't mentioned what resolution you're running at as well.

If you're running at 2560x1440, and also you have your games installed on a hard drive instead of an SSD, then the performance you describe sounds about right.

Also ACBF is known for being very badly optimised, and the other games you mention are multiplayer. Multiplayer games benefit greatly from CPU power, so if your 4770 is the non-k version (and thus not overclocked) then this will hold back your performance in multiplayer games.

Yep, my bad. Im currently on my old monitor till I get the fps issue sorted. So res is 1920x1080. Games are on a HD that’s very old. Could this be part of the issue? They are SATA though. OS boots on a SSD.

My CPU is not overclocked yet. I too worried I’ll ruin everything. Is it easier than I think to do?

Does the 780ti have both 8 pin power plugs connected? Motherboard has 24 pin and 8 pin power plugs connected? What are the temps like on the cpu and gpu? Something could be throttling due to heat. Do you have the latest motherboard bios, especially if it's a Gigabyte motherboard? Bios updates have been known to fix gpu compatibility problems.

Yes, the 780ti has both 8 pins plugged in and the MB has the 24pin and 8pin plugged in. Going to do tests on temps tonight but when I used Heaven Benchmark the GPU didn’t go over 80.

Will def see about updating the BIOS tonight. While on the MB topic, ive had issues with a stick of RAM since I did the upgrade. Every time I have both sticks seated correctly I get BSOD on boot up. They are fine seated on their own, so I don’t think it’s the RAM itself. Ive previously sent the RAM back and been sent a replacement but get the same issue. I’m starting to think this issue may be linked with the one im currently having. The RAM is Teamgroup Vulcan 2x8GB 2133MHZ

Bios updates can cure memory compatibility problems too. In fact most bios updates are specifically for that or to improve system stability. Make sure you use the built in bios flashing tool, don't use windows flashing software.

Seeing as you also have a memory problem as well check the cpu pins to see if any have been bent. What cooler do you have? A cooler tightened down too hard can cause problems with memory due to the pins being forced out of alignment. Slackening the cooler off a bit can cure this.

I have a Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler. ive been told about possibly being too tight before. I'll take a look at the cpu pins tonight.

I meant you have the wrong information about the PSU in your OP post.

As for the PSU you have, it should handle the system fine. I agree with the guys above...try updating motherboard bios if not already done so.

For overclocking the CPU, since you already have a decent CPU cooler, it just simply case of going into bios, increase the CPU's (4770K's) default multiplier (voltages as well if doing high overclock), save and reboot.

The default multiplier for i7 4770K should be 35 (35x100 base clock=3.50GHz). If you change the multiplier to 40, it will then become 40x100, which will give you 4.00GHz. You should be able to do this without the need of increase or playing around with voltage, but any higher than 4.00GHz, you might need more voltage to make the overclock stable.

IMO if you've dropped £2,000 on the system, it is a crime to run the CPU at stock speed. Comparing to the stock clock 3.50GHz, more i7 4770K should manage at least 4.40GHz...as for whether or not the higher overclock can be pushed even higher, it would then be depended on how good the motherboard, the particular CPU chip you got is and if the temp is any restriction.

It was always my intention to overclock but i lost all confidence when i hit the RAM issue.

I'd need some kind of guidance on how to get to the speed with amending the voltages etc as i have no idea about that sort of stuff.
