Low Frequency Knocking sound dependent on speed

Hey Motors forum,

I have a Mitsubishi Galant 2.5l, 24 valve, V6 sport manual (lovely car - manual is rare in the UK) but its a bit old (X-reg) and has done 130K miles so it's getting on a bit.

The engine is a peach and runs a smooth as butter but recently I have noticed a low frequency knocking noise coming from the front drivers side that increases in "knocks per minute" dependent on speed but totally independent on engine revs/clutch position or application of brakes - and its getting worse. Must be the running chain I reckon.

I have checked all the wheel bearings and all seem tight. Its difficult to get under the car as its a bit low (sport model) and I don't have a decent jack :(

I'm thinking it likely a gaitor failure leading to driveshaft bearing wear? Any other suggestions as to cause?

I'm planning on booking it into a local garage to diagnose it, but the cars not worth much any more, maybe a grand and a half at best for a collector, so I'm trying to work out the risk of me having to write it off and buy another car.

I would like to keep it running for as long as possible the engine is worth the fuel consumption ;) Any other suggestions as to what it may be so I can cost potential repairs?

Cheers for any help.
