Low ping - disadvantage?

Hi everyone...

Im having a dilemma. I am on ADSL+ and i ping approx 16ms right now... i live 90m from the exchange.

The thing is it seems to have a negative impact on my gaming experience. I play a lot of FPS games... which all have a degree of lag-compensation in their net code.

I on the other hand appear to get reverse lag-comp. Its as if every game i play puts me ahead of where i am so infact gives other the advantage.

This has become more noticeable when my connection has been improved over the last few years....

Playing Black Ops tonight and i swear that nearly every person is shooting at me a split second before ive actually emerged around a corner and quite often after ive already run past i get shot from behind even though im now behind cover or a wall. Now this isnt once every few times but like EVERY time. Its driving me insane.

Ive tried changing all sorts of config settings to improve this but its pretty much every FPS i play :-/

What do you guys think?

Nick

i thought it generally went the lower the ping, the better the connection and reg?.. sometimes its just down to a poor server though

I find this with certain games that use lag compensation, when I had interleaving on my line for awhile I seemed to do a lot better with the ~40+ms ping now its back to around 20ms on fast path I don't seem to do quite as well and seem to get shot "ahead" of myself more often.

Backward recconciliation seems to favor those with a latency time around about the same as 1000/sv_fps typically around 30-50ms with a quick falloff below that and a more gradual falloff above that so ping times around 50-60ms seem more optimal with games using these systems.

Ive noticed this especially with COD games as you say its the anti lag and it really annoys me ,what i generally do now is find game servers in the browser that ping around 100 and play on them i do a lot better with 100 ping than 20 which is just stupid in this day and age

Have you played BC2 ? there is no lag-compensation in that game and feels very nice at low ping :)

Black Ops has crappy net code. Terrible net code. Even worse than Doom 1 over a dial-up modem connection.

COD:MW2 on the other hand has great net code.

Correct, a lower ping can impact your gaming.

Lag and response all relates to server side transactions. I am not entirely clear on the process but I do know the server will predict where your moving to. Hence, it appears that people are always firing at your first. I believe this is called interp / interpretation in most games.

It has been a theory in the past that you should set this to your ping, e.g. 15 ms would mean interp of at least 0.02 (rounded). I believe there is a direct link to how your hitboxes move and how fast you process transactions sent to you by the server.

Secondly, having a better connection will mean the registry ON YOU will be better in most instances. You may also find that on some instances, when you shoot at people, nothing will happen and the term 'no reg' will spring to mind. This again is due to the otherside connection not recognising as many shots as you have fired.

As for the resolution, if you are a PC Gamer, e.g. TF2, CSS, QL you can use cl_interp XXX commands to resolve this. Or some other clever commands that can be found on google.

As for Xbox any other pc game, I don't know.

lame console ports not being changed at all for PC. I stopped playing cod after Modern Warfare 1, although I would have played WaW if I had seen any improvements, Modern Warfare 2 ended COD on the PC as far as competing goes (for me). Luckily, I prefer battlefield/Starcraft anyway :D
