As above i need to upgrade the m\b and cpu for my home server as i need more sata ports and decided time to upgrade rather than buying a sata pci card, so looking for a low power cpu and no extras will be needed.
any ideas?
Thanks
Robert

update son has an abit AN8 ultra with an Opteron 146 that he says i can have, so do i go for this or a new build

Are you buying a new motherboard as well? If not, we'll need to know what you've got at the mo so as to suggest something to put in it :)

Also as a home server, is it in a regular sized pc case, or micro atx/mini itx? ^^;

Sorry no m\b looking for that also but posted that in the m\b section<didn't want to upset and post in wrong section> atx size is wanted hopefully with onboard gpu to save power

Athlon II, depending on how much power you need either the x2 or x3. I think the x3 435 is best bang for buck right now, it's just tenner more than x2 and good 30-40quid below x4. Grab am2+ or am3 board (am3 might be better if you look into upgrading in the future ) and you're set for just over 100quid for both, plenty of power and stays very cool as well.

Beg pardon, you did say you were upgrading motherboard and cpu in your first post - misread you there ^^;

Have you considered an nVidia Ion/Atom system? The one motherboard will give you onboard video, audio, and CPU, i.e. it's a complete unit. Also has extremely low electrical power draw. As far as I'm aware, you can screw a mini ITX board into a full ATX case, it'll just have a lot of spare room around it :)

Up side; very economical file server and a viable media centre even for HD content.
Down side; not powerful, won't play games or do serious number crunching.

Do you know what WHS is?

Why on earth would you spec an X3?

Its the bottom of the Chart here for power consumption

Thanks for the replies but as easy rider says it is only for a home sever so that would be overkill.
It will only be used as a media server holding my hd rips music and photos also it will back up the home pcs and thats about it so long as it can handle the hd video the htpc will handle the rest

I am currently running an Opteron 146 (overclocked to 2.9ghz) as a media hub at home and it works perfectly. Thats actual HD playback, not streaming.

I can imagine you'd do fine with the processor in a streaming capacity, I stream to the Xbox 360 perfectly. And i even did it while the processor was clocked lower at just 2.4ghz, I am guessing you'll be overclocking this processor your son is giving you? as they're overclocking dreams generally :p

*edit* thought i'd add, I had to increase voltage for the 2.9ghz, but the 2.4ghz overclock is just standard vcore. :)

How about this AMD Athlon II X2 240e Energy Efficient only 45w but don't know anything else
Robert

wannabedamned if i went the opteron i would undervolt it for power saving

Only problem with that is the lack of sata ports.

Hehe, 3 internal, 1 external; even for my main PC that'd be two more than I need - but I guess requirements vary. Just wanted to raise it as the lowest power (and pretty cheap) home server build :)

Its a good choice for a WHS

But an expansion card would be needed for SATA and the OP wants to avoid this.

TBH...if it was me...I would just use the opty rig save some money and recycle the parts and get a SATA card.

WHS doesn't need cpu power at all.

Hello Robert,

just read the thread and think it sounds like an interesting project, the socket 939 kit your son has is capable of the task in hand but it is getting on a bit . . . I'd blag that kit of your lad, say "thanks son" and then quickly sell it at auction while he's not looking and buy some new shiney! :D

That Abit AN8 ultra still sells for over £50 at auction and DDR memory also commands a healthly price, let us know what you have! . . . . either way here is a respectable Home-Server set-up for approx £80 sponds, onboard IGP, low power mono-core, 4x SATA-II ports yada, yada . . . . let me know if you need any more help, good luck! :cool:

CPU + Mobo £70
1GB DDR2 (used) £10
Total= £80

I use an old E6600 in my WHS with an old Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P motherboard which has 8 SATA ports onboard.
Wanted to use my old parts. With an old ATI 3850 Graphics card, it idols around 100w, but quite a bit more now as have 10x harddrives attached (with an added PCI SATA card).
