¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I bought a 2nd hand laptop, and have been having a few problems with it. It's an advent 7012, and the specs say it should have a 2.6ghz P4 processor.

Now, when I boot it up it says it has a 2.8GHz processor, so I'm guessing it got changed at some point. The only problem is it get HOT. Real hot. So hot it you can feel it thru the keyboard.

The cooler isn't exactly amazing either. Single heatpipe, with very small fins and a small fan. So I'm guessing the cooler cannot cool a 2.8ghz P4, but I'm wondering if the original 2.6ghz chip was a low power version, or a version that gives off less heat (wasn't there a p4 chip that was notoriously hot?). If so, where can I get it, as i'm sure this laptop will melt if it's left on for any length of time.

As far as I'm aware there are two types of mobile p4's, one is the mobile P4-m without cover (IHS), produces less heat and the highest model runs @ 2.6Ghz. The other one is the mobile P4 with cover and performance nearner to the desktop P4 but produces more heat, highest model runs @ 3Ghz+.

I'd check CPU-Z and find out which one of the above your laptop is using, bear in mind that it could also be using a pure desktop chip that produces the most heat which seems to be your case here. Also check the chipset your laptop is using which indicates which cpu your laptop will support. If it's a desktop chipset then IT WON'T SUPPORT ANY OF THE MOBILE P4 CPUS.

I'm a bit of an intel n00b you see.... My main rig is an AMD.

Now this laptop has had a new hard disk, and I need to install windows XP.

The only thing is, after around 10 mins, it get too hot!

I've got a linux live boot CD, so hopefully I can get that up and running, and maybe there's an equivalent to CPUZ for linux. :)

I know you say it gets to hot and all , but by too hot what do you mean , is the plastic becoming spongey , or is it just unbearable to touch , or like the outside of a hot cup of tea ?

Also see if you can get into the BIOS of the laptop , and have a look to see if there is a tempeature read out . Unlikely in a laptop i know but its worth a look.

You will be safe as long as the temps are below 80 Degrees, and the laptop isnt melting , i should imagine anyways :)

My P4 laptop gets really hot too if I leave it on my bed, by really hot I mean it's unbearable to touch for too long but not to the point that it will burn your skin.

Sometimes I can feel the heat on my keyboard too, this is normal for all P4 laptops as mobile P4s can take anything upto 80~100C.
