Ok so i sold my gaming PC awhile ago and bought a laptop. However i have an HP SFF machine that my parents use sometimes and I use for some things too. Its a decent enough machine and has a PCI-E slot, so im looking for a GPU that would be good for the odd game.

Its plugged into a 19" (1280x1024) monitor, so the res isn't that high. Here are the specs (I mean decent by my standards :p):

Core 2 Duo E6300
5Gb DDR2 ram (random amount i know)
320Gb HDD
PSU is pretty low, like 300w or so i think.

Been researching and the Radeon 5570 has popped up. Seems decent enough, however i also noticed the GT240 is around too, which seems to have better performance.

Any advice on this matter? Its not gonna be used for hardcore gaming as i use my 360 and PS3 for that. Just something that will run games decently and not overly expensive!

That or get a 5570 low profile.

None of the GT240 low profile cards use GDDR5.

You could try a sata -> molex -> PCIE set.

Think the GT240 is much more faster than the 5570 if going by benchmarks of the normal sized GT240 (the low profile version retains the speed/clocks of the normal sized one). 5570 has DX11 support, but of course you won't be using/playing DX11 games with this type of card.

Sparkle are releasing a fanless GT240 low profile, don't think its out yet though.

True, the 5570 doesn't use GDDR5 either.

The normal 240 is faster by anything from single figures to a dozen fps depending on the game.

I'm interested in why the 240 is stuck with a cooler that is over 1 slot thick but should only produce the same kind of heat as the 5570 which is easily cooled by a single slot thickness low profile cooler.

Bit annoyed since I upgraded my GT220 to a 5570 and now Sparkle after smoking a bit of whatever it is they were on when they made a low profile 9800GT has made a low profile 240.

Must find some benchmarks for this LP version.

Oh well, there's a hardware race even at low profile level.

Don't believe its rebranded from anything, brought out with the GT210 and GT220, it's slower than a 9600GT by a few percent but more energy efficient.

Still all low profile 240s are GDDR3 and not GDDR5.

Means its not that much faster than a 5570 and consumes almost twice the power.
