After looking at the RAC I'm getting from my Phenom, I've realised that it's a bit low.

Phenom

Comparison with Beserker's dual core

Now my Phenom has twice as many cores and each core is faster than his right? The only difference is the workunit completion time but I know that each of my units takes ~3 hours. Should I make it longer?

Using BOINC version 5.10.45. Could it be my BOINC version? or just a difference in CPU architecture?

However, this chap...

using the same chip but with slightly slower speeds has more RAC than me and is getting more credit per unit. His run for about 4 hours, could this explain it?

Well, in theory since the credit is determined by the number of completed models in the allotted time compared against a benchmark CPU it shouldn't make a difference to the overall RAC.
Running a WU for a longer time will score more points per WU since more models are being completed.

Try upping the time per WU in your settings from 3 to 4 hours and see if your RAC improves. As I said in theory it should remain fairly constant.

Just to give you a basis for comparison.

That machine is:

Dell Optiplex desktop
E6600 @ Stock
4GB PC5400
Vista SP1 32-bit
Mostly idle
Set to default workunit time (3 hours/WU)

It's actually my development machine in the office.

PS - my best machine by RAC is a Q6600 set to use 75% of cores (the remaining core is left free for servicing the three - soon to be six - TV tuners in that machine).

Even when I compare that machine to one of my dual cores, the quad is still performing really badly. It should be at least twice as much as my dual although to be fair I haven't let the RAC flatten out yet.

It's on a machine that is idle 24/7 other than R@H with 2GB of RAM so I don't see any reason as to why the RAC isn't going up fast :(

Check your BOINC settings to make sure you haven't accidentally throttled CPU usage. If in doubt, clearing local preferences might help.

Get a no access error when trying to view that page, what does it have on it?

EDIT: Could it be because I'm not using an AM2+ motherboard? Would that have an effect on the speed at which it can run R@H?

Wouldn't have thought so. I've never heard of the AM2+ boards but I'd heard the pre-AM2 boards were actually very slightly better than the AM2 ones, at least at the start.

If you're running Vista check you're not running low on memory. I actually caught the sidebar using 800MB+ on Friday. I quit it pretty fast when I saw that.

It's running XP Pro SP3. It has 2GB of RAM and it's using about 800MB of that so it's not running out of memory.

By comparison, my Phenom II 940 which is in the PC I game on, is getting the right amount of credit.

Claims 50 and gets about 50. I checked my server dual core and that claims about the same as the 9850 except that I know it runs other programs so it won't get quite as much work done.

Nothing runs on the 9850 box

As far as the motherboard goes, lets say that it's rated for 125W TDP and the 9850 is 125W. If I overclock it, will it end up throttling to keep the watts in check?

The only two things that the 9850 and my server have in common is that they're using the same motherboard and both running speedfan. However, so is my other box which is requesting almost the right amount.

Thinking about it, my main PC (940) doesn't run speedfan for the majority of the time. Could that be it?

I also noticed that there's a recent BIOS update that improves memory performance based on AMD's recommendations for the motherboard. Could that make a difference?

EDIT: I'm noticing a pattern here. The machines running a newer client are getting more points. Only one way to test that!

Curse my 4-5 day backlog of work.
