I have a tp link 150mbps wireless card and it seems to have low signal most of the time, I have moved it atop my desk now and it is a little better, but it is against a wall and my modem thingy is at the bottom of the stairs, albeit on top of a few boxes to raise it a little. Would getting a new modem (300mbps) solve my problem? Or would pwerline adapters be a better option?

Before thinking about replacement, have you tried other options available to you to get better performance with what you have, such as changing channel and making sure you are using WPA2 and not an older encryption method.

I just purchased some powerline adaptors. The modem is fine, i think it just is not as strong through walls, neither is the wireless card. If i move my pc the signal gets stronger, but i have to have it in the middle of my desk which is no fun...

If you question is can you upgrade the wireless equipment to get better performance, then the answer is usually yes. Otherwise, you can experiment with further techniques to improve performance with existing equipment, e.g. modem even higher.
