Low sound through monitor speakers for some games

Sound through monitor speakers so low for some games - have to max out the volume to hear comfortably. Some games seem to be worse than others, some are ok, however when I plug my headphones into the base it's loud and back to what you would expect. Any clues as to what is going on and how I can fix?
