Sorry guys, what's the best performing for a cheap laptop.

Celeron M440 1.86 or a Intel Core Duo 2050/2080/2300E

Got someone who's after a basic laptop for home use. Guessing if I he goes for Vista to make sure it has 1gb ram.

thanks

Vista under 512MB is a dog from the setups I've used. Even 1GB feels sluggish at times. TBH, if this person wants a usable laptop that it will be easy to support when they break it, find a supplier that will do XP Pro or make sure they get a brand of laptop where a regular XP Pro install will be easy (i.e. not a Vaio).

Simply put - Celeron = hot paperweight.

Go for a full-fledged processor every time, not a budget half cut!

Not quite.. the old skool Celeron 300A, Celeron PIII Tualatin and Celeron M (the Pentium M derived one) were great cpus and not slouches by any means.
