M2 is a bit confusing because of both sata which is basically same speed
As 2.5ssd but can be used in smaller
Spaces
And nvme which is same size but much faster
Earlier motherboards were pcie x2/10gbs
After that motherboards are pcie x4/32gbs
And some M2 slots only take sata or nvme not either

Not all less recent motherboards can boot M2 drives
Ie have Windows on them
For just data storage it's fine
For booting from /installing windows on you would have to do some checking about that specific board
 
Ah ok, I see what you mean. With that in mind, and seeing as I dont have a super modern motherboard, i think all roads point to just getting a regular SSD.
At the moment i'm booting windows from a 250Gb ssd. Upgrading to a 1Tb should do me fine for the time being.

To be honest a decent 2.5ssd feels as fast as a nvme in most every day use
It's when you have 2 or more M2 nvme copying files to or from them slaughters
2.5ssds

Thanks for all your help. There aren't many scenarios where I have to transfer huge amounts of files, and given that my motherboard only fits 1 M2 card, I dont see a huge benefit in getting one right now. I'll just look for a decent 2.5. I have a Samsung 860 Evo atm. Do you recommend sticking with that brand?

Have always bought Samsung ssds
Not the cheapest but still got a 830 and a 840 and a 850 evo
Never failed me yet and the 830 and 840 have had a long time and lot of data
Written to them
 
The Asus website INFERS that the board can boot from the M.2 drive.
