Like an idiot I assumed the M.2 was in addition to everything else rather than subtracting from the SATA & PCI-E availability.DavieJG & aposotlis I was attempting to word the same questions earlier, its still a bit unclear which is why I asked surely an 5820k/1GPU and an M2x4 would still have the bandwidth left over?
Or perhaps we are forgetting that sata or something else takes up some bandwith !
Starting to see a 5820K is pretty bandwidth crippled and the 5930k with 40 lanes would allow at least you to use your set up a fair lot better !
Oh on a side note I noticed some X99 mobos like the gigabyte boards do not have m2 4x support they max out at 10g while the asus ones mention they have 4x and 32g

Not sure about any source tbh not really sure how the plumbing works out with bandwith perhaps sata ports and sata express can also eat into that bandwith?
Otherwise why is the M2 slot making sata ports not usable ?
But I do agree with your maths on 5820k and say SLI/Crossfire and 16x/8x config and still having a 4x (out of 28 lanes) being available, only reason why I can think that motherboard manufacturers are adding that disclaimer in the manual is something else may be using up the bandwith just like a sata drive or sata express drive.
It hurts my head even considering it ! which is why I like the 5930k with 40 lanes.
