M Suspension Delete on a Z4, Am i crazy?

I have test driven a few z4 recently and have found all of the m sports to have suspension far stiffer than i really like for day to day driving. I then drove an SE and thought it was much better, however i prefer the m sport shape and engine response.

I had been considering ordering Active Suspension which costs £650 and gives softer suspension, but BMW confirmed i could select M Suspension delete which would gives me SE Suspension and costs nothing. Overall I think i prefer SE Sus even compared to Active Sus.

Im really thinking about doing this, but wonder if long term im making a bad call long term to save a bit of money now.

Thoughts anyone?

Also were they on run-flats? The ones on the mini made the ride unbearable but switching to normal tyres of the same size improved the comfort and handling no-end.

I'm not saying you are, but don't kid yourself into thinking that the SE sus is better that the Active sus. I've not driven either so can't comment, but try to be objective- £650 on a new Z4 is not a huge amount.

As some have mentioned

The car im looking at is the E89 (28i) so there isnt an m option, Ive driven most of the wheel options but think im going to go with the 326m (19's), and then change to non run flats at some point.

Shame they stopped doing the sport suspension as that's what i have on my 1 series which is half way between the se setup and m-sport. I have seen some gorgeous Z4s around here recently!

These are great value at the moment, I suspect the prices might tighten up come summer so might be a good time to get one.

These things are dumping money hand over fist, save 10k and get a better engine by getting a 35i.

I have been trying to find a 35i for over 6 months now and still havent found one even close to the spec im after (approved and AT)) so I started to look at the new options.

Ive test driven probably 5 or so 35i's and then yesterday took out a 28i. I thought it was great, its performance is far closer to the reality of my driving and want, and the figures for econony etc look great, the trade off as i see it is no V6 and lower power, both of which are not an issue for me.

Having said all of that when i spec up the 28i with adaptive suspension and auto box, the monthly's arent too much different to a 35is which has those as standard.

Im must admit im surpirised, as i expected you to say the new 28i engine is an all round good choice for performance and economy.

Would be interested in more feedback from you.

I had an E89 35i DCT for a week and was happy to get back the E85 3.0i SE Manual I had when I wasn't so damn poor. I felt the DCT box (and extra weight) turned a sports car into a GT.

To that end, if you're after an auto, you sure the Z4 is for you? If a GT is more your bag, what about an SLK or even an SL?

Is there a reason for their dropping price so fast beyond the issues that most cars have? I have been looking at local examples of these recently and the prices are much lower than I was expecting for any of the range really. Are the engines all OK or do any of them stand out as particularly troublesome/shouldn't bother with?

The S35i have high pressure injector and fuel pump issues.

Dont think the rest have any major problems though

That would be covered by warranty, wouldn't it?

Yeah if it's still in warranty. The problem is if you buy it now and sell it later when it's ran out then it's a concern for the new buyer.

How 'cheap' are they anyway?

I have no expericence with the new 28i engine, sadly.

But I'm not sure I'd want a brand new Z4. As you can see from used values, high spec cars have taken a real hammering since the Z4 came out a little under 3 years ago. Some of the £20-£23k cars were almost £40k new. If you look towards the bottom of the range, for example the 23i, you will see they are down as low as £15k. There has been no Z4 facelift yet so they are fundamentally identical cars - just, not new.

With such a plethora of quality Approved Used examples around for such huge amounts less money, I cannot see the point in buying a new one. Especially as you can just keep renewing the warranty so a used one as as hassle free as a new one.
